Is it possible to completely remove the top cover？

Yes. The steps to open the cover are as follows: 1. Open the transparent cover. 2. Grasp the sides with both hands. 3. Apply upward force to remove the top cover for better cleaning.

Can you store the ice in the machine or do you have to put it in the freezer?

The ice will eventually melt in the hopper, but the water is reused to make more ice. My wife always keeps a bag in the freezer and refills it as needed.
