They work
They work as advertised. As they're push-to-talk over celluar (POC), as long as there's mobile network coverage, they'll work so range isn't much of a concern. I was curious to try these and use them to keep in touch with my girlfriend who lives abroad (yes, you don't even have to be in the same country). You're provided with a Global PTT website login in the box that lets you assign 2 or more of these into their own channels/rooms. I believe you can also assign them to more than one and switch them on the unit itself but I haven't found the need to do this with just 2. You can also name these channels/rooms and name the units themselves. These names will appear on the screen. I was a little worried to see that the website isn't even HTTPS and still plain old HTTP so no encryption. From that, I assume any communication between the walkies is also unencrypted. I also assume it passes through a server provided by Global PTT, probably in China. I'm not sure I'd discuss anything important or sensitive through these... But that's also true for a lot of walkie talkies. The units themselves have a solid build quality with a nice screen. They're small but fairly chunky. They came with battery packs (with a very generic label with a non-believeable capacity), lanyards, belt clips and ear pieces (which I haven't tried). They also have a fairly bright flashlight built-in which is kinda handy. The audio is pretty loud and reasonably clear (albeit compressed to a similar level as a standard phone call). The delay in audio is noticeable (guessing around 3-5 seconds). Microphone gain can be adjusted in the settings which allows some fine tuning for the quiet-spoken.I ordered these with the SIM which seems to work just fine in the UK and also Norway. I gather they probably work on multiple networks but I'm unable to check from the menus. They always seem to have a good signal, even when my phone doesn't. Perhaps that antenna isn't for show. They charge through USB-C directly into the battery pack showing a red LED while charging and green when finished. You can expect about 2 days of battery life with light use and around 2-3 hours of charge time. I had hoped they'd outlast a modern smartphone being simpler devices. The menus are a little difficult to read as text often begins scrolling off the edge before you can read it. Some of the English translations are odd. They also speak aloud menu items and settings but thankfully, this can be turned off along with beeps for any button presses. So POC walkie talkies are usually quite expensive and intended for business mostly but these are a fair bit more affordable. A mobile phone obviously works just fine, even Zello, for most cases but it is nice to have a dedicated device where you can simply press a button and it just works. I'd rate these as 5 stars if it were not for the very questionable security. Better battery life would also be nice.
