Dark Skies: The Declassified Complete Series
F**N
Finally, this epic series has been released.
Like many others that have reviewed this item, I have been waiting a long time for this to be released on DVD. Now, it's finally here!Dark Skies was a series that only lasted one season about government cover-ups of various incidences related to the UFO/alien phenomenon. It aired on Saturdays at 8 PM on NBC, which was generally a time-slot for family-friendly programs and did not help Dark Skies' chances of staying on the air. Not only that, but it was endlessly (and unfairly) compared to The X-Files, which was very popular at the time.Admittedly, while the two series had some things in common, they were really much more different than they were alike. While The X-Files had an overall alien conspiracy story-arc, it was also a show that dealt with ghosts, monsters, time travel, the occult, government conspiracies NOT related to aliens, etc. Dark Skies never focused on those things. It was also a 9 year journey of Agents Mulder and Scully searching for "the truth."With Dark Skies, the series started out with both the main characters as well as the audience knowing EXACTLY what "the truth" was from the very beginning. Aliens were here, they were hostile, and powerful people didn't want us to know. It was a story that started in the 1960s and was initially planned to bring us up to the present, going through all sorts of well-known historical events (like the JFK assassination) and tying each and every one of them to a government conspiracy to keep the truth about alien visitations on this planet a secret. It was very much a different show than The X-Files, and anyone who wrote off the show as just a cheap imitation should give it a second chance now that it is readily available on DVD at quite an affordable price. It is true to UFO/alien lore, and presents it all in a respectably well-done format of fiction. It comes in a great collector's case presented like a TOP SECRET package declassified for the first time. It even includes a booklet written by Bryce Zabel, co-creator of Dark Skies, made up to look like the information presented in the series is fact but presented as a work of fiction in order to avoid government intervention. Very cool for the fans!As others have pointed out, there are no subtitles on this release. While unfortunate, it should not stop people from buying this. It includes tons of great bonus features, including an all-new 3-part documentary on the making of the series which includes interviews with Eric Close and Megan Ward, the two main stars of the series, as well as the international version of the pilot episode! They really pulled out all the stops to make this a great release for the fans who have been waiting so long for it, so I highly recommend it!

Sometimes Truth Hides Behind A Movie Script
I had never heard of Dark Skies, I lived in Peru til the late 90's. Whilst in Peru, friends of mine would tell me of their UFO experiences and offered to take me to UFO hotspots, but I never got around to going to those places. I have never seen a UFO nor experienced a UFO "moment", nor have I obsessed over the issue. I have read much about UFO's and I have read the Lacerta Papers, and the so called "Majestic Documents", off the internet circulations. I have watched and read Commander X's version of his truth. I am a history buff and I am also very much into watching movies and upon cross referencing a particular director, I stumbled across Dark Skies. I rarely, if ever, watch television, so it didn't catch my interest...I hate cheesy T.V. productions! I recently stumbled upon the 2 hour pilot of Dark Skies on a movie site and I watched it...to my amazement, I was drawn into the movie. I was especially drawn by the parallels between true history and this fictional script, which sounded very much like the stuff I had read off the internet, concerning the Alien agenda. A couple of days ago I stumbled across the series on Amazon...the first season had been released on DVD. After I read the reviews, I decided to buy it. This is the first and only DVD I own, of a television series. The only thing I regret about buying it is that I cannot order the second season, because there is none...that is strange. I am amazed at how historical figures were incorporated into the script and how their real names were used, without a backlash. The characters playing Robert Kennedy, J Edgar Hoover, The Beatles, Hubert Humphrey, Ed Sullivan, Colin Powell, Dulles, Dorothy Kilgallen and others...all were incredibly believable! The movie ultimately ends with Majestic's, Agent Steele, who has become an alien operative, murdering a man and stealing his identification, that of a Charles Manson; then and there you know where the next season is heading, as Steele assumes the identity of "Charley". This series was meticulously researched and the 1960's movie sets were very realistic and brought me many great memories of those days. In my opinion, this Series would do very well if it were on television, even today, it afterall, makes references to the end of the millennium and the coming of a (Planet X). NBC...capitalize off the Planet X, 2012, theories...put the original Dark Skies back on the air and expand from there...the ending was left, untold, fiction or not.

This is the better Dark Skies DVD package
If you are planning to buy Dark Skies on DVD then this is the better package. OK, for the UK you will need a region-free player and an NTSC capable TV, but this box set scores over Medium Rare's Region 2 version in three important aspects - more content, better technical quality and much better extras. You'll see a review from me for the Medium Rare (MR) PAL version, which I bought first. In that I commented that the pilot episode differs from that shown on UK's Channel 4 television back in the nineties. Well, in this package, BOTH versions of the pilot are included, with The Awakening (with re-shot scenes for the USA transmission)) in its rightful place as the first episode on DVD1. The early pilot version of The Awakening is on DVD 6 and there are detailed explanations from the producer/writers Bryce Zabel and Bruce Friedman as to why all the re-shoots had to take place. The picture quality of this NTSC version is much better. The MR is presumably a conversion from NTSC video to PAL and is noticeably less crisp. There is some excellent acting in this series, and the fine detail of facial expression needs the best definition available. On a practical note, the actual packaging of these six DVDs is better (three slimline duals in a card case) rather than MR's clumsy 5-DVD plastic box with its poor retainers that allow the end disks to slip out. With the 19 episodes spread over DVDs 1 to 5, the whole of DVD6 is used for extras. There's the early pilot (called here the 'International Pilot'), a fascinating interview feature with the producers and stars Eric Close and Megan Ward, a tongue -in-cheek Glossary, the original sales presentation, some network promos and the proposal for series 2 (which, alas, was never made). Oh, and you can play The Awakening on DVD1 with a commentary from the producers and the stars (great fun).Read the reviews for the MR PAL version to make a judgement about the stories and the acting but (as long as you have the right playing equipment) buy this version.
