Ideal lead size for sketching and note making
If you haven't tried a pencil with a 1.15mm lead, you may like it.The lead size:The 1.15 mm is not so thin that it will cut into paper and not so thick (like one of those nice fat 3mm pencils) that you cannot use it like a normal pencil. I have found this good for making notes in books where a thinner lead would cut into the paper. Being thicker the lead is also easier to erase since it sits more on the surface of the paper without engraving into the paper. For those who are really into pencils, here is a finer point: With a 1.15mm lead it is still thin enough that you can keep a point on it by rotating or spinning the pencil/lead to maintain a point. This is different than a 3mm lead, which needs a sharpener; this pencil does not.The eraser:For writing, I like a pencil with an integrated eraser. I haven't been able to find a better mechanical pencil with eraser than the PhD pencil. This pencil's eraser is OK, not great. It is rather short. The lead is easier to erase than you might expect due to the thickness (see above), but buy some extra erasers now.Construction and design:Very nice quality and twist mechanism.Nice packaging:Comes with some very fancy packaging. It would make a nice gift.

An excellent mechanical pencil
In cost this falls between something from Staples and a luxury item; in feel and performance it’s much closer to the latter. It comes with spare leads and erasers, too. I’ve bought two, and probably will get a couple more, to get rid of the last Staples pencils.
