Strong overview of greenhouse gardening
This book provides a great overview of how to create your own greenhouse. What a fulfilling pursuit it is! I thought the history of greenhouses was particularly interesting, as were some of the benefits of greenhouse gardening! I never realized that greenhouse gardening allows you so much temperature control and freedom from the elements, allowing you in many cases to avoid using pesticides. I learned a lot about the types of greenhouses out there, and the pros and cons of each style. I also found the information really useful about the permits that you might need to build a greenhouse. The book helps with a lot of design questions, such as how to size your greenhouse, other factors you may want to consider related to things like airflow and maintenance, what materials to use, and so much more. It also shares helpful budgeting tips, and of course - tips on what to grow and how. This is a great book for beginners, or for anyone who is interested in possibly dipping their toes into the greenhouse gardening space!`

Not recommended for those who want greenhouse gardening information
I bought this book because I already have a greenhouse and expected information about actually gardening in it. But I was disappointed because more than half the book was about building or buying greenhouses (and to boot, it didnโt really offer any plans for building one, just examples) even though it states that on the cover. Out of 23 chapters, only 8 were devoted to actual gardening. The book should have been titled, โGreenhouses and a Few Tips About Gardeningโ. I felt deceived by the title and I donโt recommend it for anyone looking for extensive information on greenhouse gardening.

With the economy struggling worldwide and food pricesโespecially fruits and vegetablesโclimbing higher, Iโve been thinking more seriously about how to grow my own produce. I have a large backyard that would be perfect for building a greenhouse one day. For now, this book is a little ahead of where I am, since Iโm still saving the funds to get started. But Greenhouse Gardening for Beginners gives me a clear picture of whatโs possible and how I could eventually set up a greenhouse that fits my needs. The book covers everythingโplanning, building, planting, and maintenanceโso I know Iโll have a reliable reference when the time comes. Even though Iโm not ready to begin right away, itโs encouraging to see that with the right setup, I can cut down on grocery costs and enjoy fresh, healthy food straight from my garden. This book feels like a good investment in my future plans, and Iโll be coming back to it when Iโm ready to leap.

Michael York delivers a comprehensive roadmap for aspiring greenhouse gardeners in this well-structured beginner's guide. What sets this book apart is its holistic approach, covering everything from site selection and DIY construction using accessible materials like PVC and wood, to advanced techniques for maximizing year-round production. The author's strength lies in making greenhouse gardening approachable rather than overwhelming. The step-by-step construction guidance removes intimidation from building your own structure, while the organic growing techniques provide sustainable alternatives to chemical-dependent methods. The crop planning section is particularly valuable, offering practical advice on staggering plantings and selecting season-appropriate varieties for continuous harvests. The bonus content featuring greenhouse plans and seasonal extension strategies adds significant value, addressing common challenges like temperature stabilization and space optimization. The author's emphasis on thermal mass, passive solar techniques, and vertical growing solutions demonstrates real understanding of practical gardening constraints. While the book covers impressive breadth, some topics could benefit from deeper exploration, particularly pest management and troubleshooting common greenhouse problems. Additionally, regional climate considerations receive limited attention. For beginners seeking food independence or year-round fresh produce, this guide provides solid foundational knowledge and actionable plans. York successfully bridges the gap between ambitious gardening dreams and achievable reality, making greenhouse gardening accessible to newcomers.

So comprehensive and clear; and I really like the overview of pros and cons of different greenhouse designs so you can consider what would work best for you. Lots of really helpful information on how to grow and care for your greenhouse plants, and the planting calendar is also a great inclusion.
