Excellent story choices
Have been using this series of books - sought out during lockdowns to read stories to my granddaughter over FaceTime each day. Helen Paiba - who, for over 20 years, owned and ran a children's bookshop in Muswell Hill is obviously one of the best people to make fun, interesting, age appropriate choices. The stories are sometimes excerpts from full length books - but still make sense in themselves. I have followed up some of these and purchased the author's full length books. You come across the occasional word a youngster may not know but this gives rise to a useful conversation and helps widen the child's knowledge - we often go off on a fun tangent. Having said that it's well within the general ability of each age range.Have now read all her Funny stories for 7 years olds, nearly finished this 8 year olds one and got the 9 year olds on order. Helen Paiba also has other series too.

disappointment
A fair few of the stories were dated and no longer relevant. The target audience chose the book because she had very much enjoyed stories for 6 yr olds. It was read by and to a 4yr old, 8 yr old, mummy and grandma. All found the stories, apart from 2 or 3, underwhelming.

Not even funny
Unfortunately these stories are not even funny, I fact they are so bizarre it makes no sense even to an adult. My son asked me to explain the story and I couldn't... a degree in languages didn't help. Waste of money.
