Davy Crockett -Two Movie Set

Great Blu-Ray transfer
While bare bones as far as extras, the transfer is quite good. These "movies" were made from parts of a 1955 TV show, likely shot on 16MM. The transfer, however, seems quite true to the original. Overall the film grain is abundant and well preserved, as is the color saturation for 1955 source material. There are softer and lower quality shots (mostly some cropping and stock footage of animals) but these movies never looked so good.

Fess Parker brought Davy Crockett & Daniel Boone back to life::
Fact: -- Davy Crockett was real life frontiersman fed up with politics as a Congressman especially when he served in Congress. Historians say that it was his disgust with Congress & politics that pushed him into traveling to the Alamo. He was a man of actions & saw politics as a bunch of grown men just yelling or arguing to a stand off doing nothing. Could one imagine today what Crockett's biggest gripes would be as a congressman. I'd bet as sure as " bars s*** in the woods " it would be campaign finance laws & the super rich buying out the legislative part of government. His fellow Congressmen did not like Crockett nor his points of view over matters of that time & era. They wanted him out of Congress which didn't bother him. This day & age he would of been for term limits every man taking his turn at legislating. He probably would of been an outcast by both parties & the Supreme Court Justices. Fact: -- Fess Parker was a big man at 6'5 , good looking actor & wine connoisseur investing his money on primeCalifornia real estate for his grape vineyards. He built his home, bed & breakfast inn all upon his California countryside of vineyards in the Santa Ynez region. He lived the good life very well respected by family, friends & the public who visited and toured his business establishment of fine wines. He was very opened to all. . He retired after only 22 yrs in Hollywood & building his wine business with his family. He passed away in 2010 at age 85.. Fess made a good living thanks to Walt Disney making him a icon in Walt Disney productions of Davy Crockett episodes leading to paraphernalia worth millions in sales throughout the whole country of baby-boomers. Fess Parker also starred in other Western & WW II movie roles sharing top billing with the likes of Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Robert Taylor, Jeffry Hunter, Jeff Chandler & Jack Lord to name a few. Walt chose him over James Arness for the Davy Crockett role after seeing him in the makings of the movie " Them " .. It was Walt who made Fess Parker famous & the coon skin cap. The cowboy /western era of the 1950s was very popular on tv & movie theaters in America, Hollywood couldn't make them fast enough with more actors starring in them Duke Wayne, Randolph Scott, Greg Peck, Richard Widmark, James Stewart. Fess took a back seat to the new icons of Hollywood Westerns & hung up his coonskin hat of Crockett & Daniel Boone. . This dvd double feature is a piece of Americana & Disney history I added this to my treasured Home Theater library of over 1800 choice titles.. Fact : -- Davy Crockett liked & got along with Indians, knew their ways. This may of been one of other reasons why he was disliked by some of his fellow Congressmen.

not sure if this is official version
There is also a Disney Treasures version, sometimes available through third parties for around $45. This version, selling for $10 is quite good and I really question whether the Disney Treasures disc would be worth the extra $35. These were filmed over 60 years ago so the image quality is hardly pristine. Some feel this disc cut scenes, but I sure cannot say I remember any scenes that were not shown. It combines five shows originally aired on the television show. It probably won't impress today's kids, but for the baby boomers who were first introduced to David Crockett and the Alamo by Disney, it is great nostalgia

old movie still great
I hadn't seen these two movies since I was fairly young on the old Disneyland television series (first one in color!) I was surprised at their attention to historical detail. It's also appropriate for youngsters, so long as the parents don't mind an occasional "cowboy brawl" no blood and guts sort of thing... quite tame by today's standards. Yea it's a little hokey but that never hurt anyone.

King of The Wild Frontier
Growing up in the fifties our family watched "Walt Disney Presents" every Sunday night...it was a stable family fare given the mores of the era. Walt Disney managed to produce the most memorable true life adventures, cartoons (animated features now), and several Historical features such as the legend of Davy Crockett. I was glued to the small tubed- oversized electronic conglomeration that was television when 7pm rolled around! I was the proud owner of an "authentic" Davy Crockett Coonskin Cap and dreamed of trailblazing and Indian fighting like my hero. Fess Parker forever will be remembered as the REAL Davy Crockett although what real historical fact may be somewhat different, he nonetheless became the role model for kindness, chivalry, honesty and courage for us guys back then....The two movies included here are just as I remembered them to be--I was taken back to a simpler time and thoroughly entertained ONCE MORE...the rich locations, costumes, authentic regional dialog and mannerisms further the realism Mr. Disney hoped to portray; the battle scenes seem almost tepid by today's graphic display of blood/guts/profanity that "modern" films include; yeah, people died in films back then but did we experience nightmares from their demise like today? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy many of the directors and film makers of today however they cannot stand along side of John Ford or Walt Disney in capturing the imaginations of moviegoers, especially youthful ones. This is but one of the many magical movie momentos from Walt Disney Studios---I feel this is a must for a younger audience: those who would like to throw the pillows on the floor, dig into a big bowl of popcorn and take off for parts unknown on an adventure of a lifetime........Davy Crocket(Fess Parker) left us a little backwoods gift of sheer common sense- "Be Sure You're Right And Then Go Ahead".....a fitting bit of wisdom from the King of the wild frontier.

Ordered as presents for my sons
I already owned a copy of these Disney films based on the adventures of the real-life frontiersman, Davy Crockett. I was part of the generation of kids who fell in love with them when they were shown on the mid-1950's Disney TV show. Excellent piece of Americana that made actor Fess Parker a household name, but also type-cast him as a frontiersman the rest of his career, as he also portrayed TV's Daniel Boone in the 1960's.

This was a great film from my childhood days
I had to have these 2 movies as a kid I loved Fess Parkers Disney films and Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier I saw on the big screen several times as a child. I also saw the follow up River Pirates but felt that wasnt as good as the original film. However it was entertaining but the first covered his whole life story
