Irish Railways - Off the Beeten Track Dvd, Volume Two, ‘Loaded Out’This series of three dvds looks at the first week of the 1998 Irish ‘Sugar Beet Campaign’ and Volume Two concentrates on the movement of heavily loaded beet trains from Wellington Bridge to Mallow, 113 miles away over an operationally difficult, steeply graded and fully occupied single line route. Starting with a double-headed 141 departure, an 071 is next seen working flat out up Taylorstown bank. We visit Waterford where no less than three successive beet trains appear. Filmed at most locations on the route, this Volume includes floodlit night shots at Carrick-on-Suir, the flat crossover and reversal necessary at Limerick Junction through to the final arrival at Mallow. No production would be complete without an overall appreciation of the railways of this less travelled quiet backwater of Southeast Ireland. Other trains shown include beet train light engine movements, palletised and bulk cement, fertiliser, ammonia and container trains. Some of those illusive Rosslare-Limerick 141 hauled passenger trains with their steam heated Cravens coaches Dublin-Tralee and Cork Inter City’s along with both old and new generation Limerick Junction-Limerick shuttles. Even the Mallow-Tralee shuttle takes a corner of the stage. Travel back in time to a railway adorned with semaphore signals and quaint level crossings. A little history a few technical details, but overall a dvd of an area of fascinating railway operation. Approx. 55 minutes. Narrated by Rob McCaffery. (1999).
