Into the Forbidden City
The Hidden Masters of Marandur (The Pillars of Reality Book 2) It swiftly dawns on Master Mechanic Mari and her friend Sage Alain that their respective guilds want them dead and have been organising intentionally lethal situations for them. They are forced to go on the run from their guilds, and quickly find themselves committing a capital crime against the Empire, the greatest of the "common" powers. They venture into the former imperial capital "Marandur", entry to which is forbidden on pain of death, and find that there's more than one way to get killed there quite apart from Imperial Legionaries. They are after forbidden knowledge, which may help them break the power of the guilds. Which needs to be done, as a growing storm of anger against the oppressive power of the guilds threatens to sweep all civilization away from the world. A tense adventure, where the pair make a few friends and allies.

Fascinating story
The story line was quite unexpected although with the hindsight of having read the book it became obvious. Hope the next book is just as good.

Teenage read
Ho hum, takes forever to get anywhere. Mildly interesting split society, characters are definitely teenage heroes/heroines.

A Good Read
Clever, original ideas (although the theme is not entirely new) sustained well. Very enjoyable. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Jack has the ability to conjure pictures in the mind that are invariably better than any on the screen. He's a brilliant story teller.
