You have to fit the metal bottom into the wooden vertical section which was a surprise as I thought it'd come ready made, but it was an easy two second job. The bookends are very sturdy and good quality, especially for the price (£8.99 when I purchased).I use them to hold up theatre programmes, many of which are larger than A4 and they still work perfectly.
