Metis: The Life and Times of Charles de Langlade

Entertaining and Substantial
This book is a great read for anyone with an interest in the French and Indian War but little patience for dense history books. The author surrounds true historical facts with a charming fictional story about an aspiring reporter (P.V. Lawson) and his endeavors to interview an aged Charles de Langlade in 1801, a true historical figure who lived from 1729 to 1801. The descriptions of several specific battles (e.g., Monongahela, Fort William Henry, Fort Carillon, Fort Duquesne) are delivered in Langlade’s “voice” along with Insightful information about the interaction between the Native American tribes and the French and English military and colonial militia. And P.V.’s adventures in traveling to Green Bay from New York in 1801 and his subsequent meetings with the “great” (and cranky) Charles de Langlade give the reader an appreciation for the politics and general way of life of the times.

Fantastic historical novel!
Métis was indeed a great historical novel. The main character, Charles de Langlade, was fascinating and his experiences and personality were adeptly captured by PV Lawson, the reporter. The various battles, including size of army, location and description of fortifications, strategy, and result were carefully articulated. Excellent way to learn the different styles and capabilities of French, English, Militia, and Indian warfare. The character development of PV, de Langlade, Evangeline, and Charlotte was excellent. Getting to know the characters also included understanding the lifestyle in the Wisconsin territory and interestingly how that compared to PV’s background in NY City. The author also did a great job describing Indian life, culture, and relationships with the various colonial groups.Overall, a great read which I highly recommend!
