When my mom passed away 2 years ago I kept all her knitting and crochet supplies, and vowed to learn. The lock-downs seemed custom made to try something new. I have watched a bunch of youtube videos, but no matter how slow I viewed them, I always ended with a mess of what looked like garbage. I got this book, because I thought once I learned, I would make cute amigurumi. I started reading it, thinking it would be too advanced, but the way that the book is arranged, made it look easy, so I just jumped in.She starts with the most basic animal, the chick (which is really just a sphere) and each animal builds on the last with more advanced parts. The first lesson is 21 pages long because it has dozens of pictures for the steps, and the diagrams are very easy to figure out. In that first lesson there are no assumptions that the user knows anything, you learn to single crochet, how to increase stitches, decrease stitches, even make that blasted "magic circle" although it is not called that in the book.If you have never crocheted before, my only advice would be to practice with thicker yarn, bigger hook, and yarn that is not too dark or light, so you can see your stitches easily. After a few days of practice, I started using the thinner yarn, smaller hook for cute animals. A lot of the videos I watched went into painstaking detail about how to wrap the "feeder" yarn though your hand so you can go faster. Don't worry about that. This book never addresses it, so I never thought about it. Now I think I have a method after 4 weeks but I still don't go very fast.Since I have never crocheted before this, I cannot comment on how the instructions compare to other patterns, but I found the crochet chart and the stitch table very simple to understand.This book has given me a great foundation for crocheting. Now I have built on it and have used another book to master more advanced stitches and projects.

Easy to follow directions. Fairly simple patterns. Look great when done! I’d recommend this book.

Patterns start very easy and progress to intermediate. Beginning patterns are basically no sew, and progress to more sewing necessities. All patterns build on skills,used in previous patterns.Teaches beginners how to read and use pattern charts as well as written instructions. Instructions on magic circle and basic crochet stitches.

Let me start by saying that I’ve never crocheted or even picked up a crochet hook before using this book. Overall, I’m very happy with it Bc I wanted to learn how to crochet exclusively to make amigurumi. It does a great job of explaining techniques and stitches. Here are my tips:1.) All the projects are really small so you can just buy a cheap multipack or multiple colors of yarn (in small spools) to experiment and make the projects without having to buy a bunch of yarn.2.) Keep trying! I’m a very crafty person who’s good with their hands, but it still took me a while to learn. I didn’t pick it up right away. Do it over and over again until you figure it out.3.) Sometimes the book tells you to hold the yarn or the hook a certain way, if that’s uncomfortable or feels weird for you after you’ve tried it a bunch of times, try it in a way that feels natural for your hands. Other than that, the instructions and visual models of how to make stitches are really good. Like I said, be patient and keep going over your mistakes to see what you did wrong. I’ve had a lot of “break throughs” on my crochet journey.4.) USE ROW COUNTING RINGS5.) Write notes on what place/ round/ stitch you’re on so you don’t lose place.Again, I’m really happy with this and glad I picked this book Bc I’ve learned a lot.I’m on project 9 out of 11 and have had to repeat some of the projects (for improved results and technique). I would gladly buy another crochet book by this author.

The animals are cute. There are lots of photos and "How to " instructions good for beginners. My problem is that the written patterns leave much to be desired. They don't indicate color changes and other details I am used to. I consider myself very experienced at amigurumi, having made literally hundreds of animals, but I do not like using charts. It is hard for me to keep track of my place. I found the book cute but frustrating. I will donate it to the library.

This book is very easy to follow. My 12 yo was shown how to start a beginning crochet chain by her friends at school and was able to follow the patterns in this book easily.

Love this book. Even though it uses US terms theres a bit at the beginning showing you which stitch you need to use, which is great and makes it easier, amigurimi usually uses 1 stitch as well. The patterns have the stitches numbers in table form and in charts, I've never used charts before and as long as I keep track of which row im on I've been able to follow and understand the charts. I've made the chick and a penguin so far and look forward to making others and using the skills I've learned from this book. While it's not a beginners book it does have basic patterns which have been great for a beginner like myself
