A beautiful fiftieth-anniversary edition of the essential Indian cookbook—"the final word on the subject" ( The New York Times )—featuring a new introduction by the author and a new foreword by Yotam Ottolenghi An instant classic upon publication, this book teaches home cooks perfect renditions of dishes such as Mulligatawny Soup, Whole Wheat Samosas, and Chicken Biryani, alongside Green Beans with Mustard, Khitcherie Unda (scrambled eggs, Indian style), and Nargisi Kofta (large meatballs stuffed with hard-boiled eggs). The “queen of Indian cooking" ( Saveur ), Madhur Jaffrey helped introduce generations of American home cooks to the foods of the subcontinent. In An Invitation to Indian Cooking —widely considered one of the best cookbooks of all time and enshrined in the James Beard Foundation’s Cookbook Hall of Fame—Jaffrey gives readers a sweeping survey of the rich culinary traditions of her home. Living in London and homesick, she was prompted to re-create the dishes of her Delhi childhood. Jaffrey taught herself the art of Indian cuisine and, in this groundbreaking book, she shares those lessons with us all. Featuring more than 160 recipes, the book covers everything from appetizers, soups, vegetables, and meats to fish, chutneys, breads, desserts, and more. From recipes for formal occasions to the making of everyday staples such as dals, pickles, and relishes, Jaffrey’s “invitation” has proved irresistible for generations of American home cooks. Beautifully redesigned—and with a new foreword by the author and a new introduction by superfan, Yotam Ottolenghi—and featuring Jaffrey's own illustrations, this anniversary edition celebrates An Invitation to Indian Cooking ’s half a century as the go-to text on Indian cooking. Review: Solid cookbook that doesn't contain errors and the binding is strong. Go with the classic book! - If you are going to make ethnic food for your home, it is best to trust someone who has a track record of doing it right. Not all cookbooks are pretested well, and some have errors in them regarding cooking times, cooking temps and some are missing ingredients. This is a solid cookbook with a history of use by home cooks that is successful and is well regarded. If you're going to add one ethnic book on Indian cooking, this is the one that comes highly suggested. Review: Authentic recipes - I heard that this was one of the best authentic Indian cookbooks available. I bought it for my son, who is a cook and LOVES Indian food. He and his wife are super excited about testing out some of these recipes.

Great cookbook opens new vistas, and fun to use
I have always like dining in restaurants that serve good Indian cuisine. Now, thanks to this book that many American home cooks have treasured for 50 years, I can explore all my favorites in my own kitchen. It happens that there's a well-stocked supplier of fresh spices and condiments in my city, so I can closely follow the recipes. It's a lot of fun, and the results are good to eat.

Good Recipes, Horrible layout.
Recipes are great, but this is the WORST cookbook I've ever seen in terms of navigation. It starts like one of those blog pages where you have to read an entire life story before a hint of a recipe, and there is no dedicated table of contents. So if you know you're looking for a specific recipe.. it's not easily found. You have to go to 'sections' of the meat you're looking to cook, and THEN you can find the recipe in order... not page number.. order. So you want his one? it's between these other two.. go find it.

Unassailable
This book and its author live up to their reputation. I highly recommend the Chicken Moghlai recipe in particular. I followed it to the letter and received effusive, over-the-top accolades on the results. The Gajar Halwa recipe i found called for about 4 tablespoons too much oil, which i had to strain out at the end of cooking, and about a tablespoon too little sugar, but it was a fine dessert after those adjustments. I put the gajar halwa in a casserole dish and decorated the top with a rangoli of ground pistachios and cashews, so it was green, white, and orange, those being the colors of the Indian flag 🙂. Overall i am very pleased with this book and give it my highest recommendation.

A lot of recipes
I had this cookbook in my cart for a long time. I’m glad I finally pulled the trigger and bought it! The recipes look so good and I’ll be trying at least one this weekend.

In love
I've only made one recipe. I chose one at random that I already had all the ingredients, the marinated pork chops. I have three kids. I have never in my life made a dinner that everyone was enthusiastic about eating but these pork chops were devoured in minutes. I didn't have to threaten or bribe anyone. My oldest even decided to pack leftovers for lunch at school! She never eats leftovers. If she packs leftovers, it's because we had pizza. Now I will say, my kids eat a wide variety of food. If you have picky eaters, I can't make any promises with them. But Im excited to give everything else a try in this book.

Good book, but beware of Amazon shipping/packaging
The book is full of lots of good recipes for cooking Indian recipes. The main issue I had was that Amazon shipped this book with a few other books in a box with no padding, so the book arrived damaged (corners dented and scratched) and then only option was to return the book for a refund. So I would give this book 3.5 stars but 1 star to Amazon for packaging,

A must for the serious East Indian food lover
This book is full of fabulous recipes. If you really want to get the best out of it, do some of the preparation the previous day as the marinade process gives the food an unbelievable flavor. A must have book!
