VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR The Aerosol Grey Machine CD

Van Der Graaf Generator - "The Aerosol Grey Machine"
This is the band's first studio album. It was released in 1969. In this version of the FIE there are two bonuses. Perhaps, it's the easiest album to be listened to and enjoyed the first time. The second may be competing closely. It's not an easy band liking lots of labuns right from the first audition. However, you can not just get carried away for the first time. The album features an even softer vocals rock, but already showing the strength of Peter Hamill, compared to the later albums. The best track is "Aftewards" which is a hit among the band's fans. There's no bad track to the style of the band. Very good! Note 8.0.

Surprisingly competent debut by VDGG.
Considering that this record was made in a single day, it shows that Peter Hammill was already a very competent composer. It is not like any other record in the VDGG catalogue other than Peter's "fools Mate" which is a real classic. There are moments that hint at the greatness that is to come most especially "Afterwords" and "Necromancer" which are both excellent single tracks. "Aquarian" Is a good example of the optimistic hippy inspiration of the time. "Octopus" would later evolve into an epic live track. A great live in the studio version of this recently surfaced, on the expanded H. to He. "Orthenthian streets, running back and into a game" all hint of the later VDGG with its darker themes but for the time being VDGG are not as gloomy as all that. "Black smoke yen" shows that this was already a band in so much as the relationship between Banton and Hammill is already bearing fruit. There are two different versions of this cd in circulation Rep 4647-wy has the two tracks that make up the impossible rare "People you were going to" and "Firebrand" single released on Polydor. A record that is so rare that you are unlikely to find a copy at all, should you happen on a copy be prepared to pay £500.00. This makes this CD a must own recording for VDGG fans. I like both of these tracks and this is the only realese to feature either in their studio form. However the other version which is released on Peter's own Fie Label contains "Ferret & Featherbird " and "Giant squid" both of which are of course desirable to fans of the band. The Fie CD has a much better sound so if you are just after one go with the Fie release and support Peter. Although most people who are real fans of this group would say that this is in reality a Peter Hammill solo effort there is plenty of effort here, enough to justify the name VDGG in my Opinion. Hugh Banton is instantly recognizable as a major contributor to the VDGG sound. All in all this is a fine record which is surprisingly easy to listen to. The Lyrics are already quite advanced and worthy of closer examination. This record was the one that even people who did not like later VDGG albums would ask to be put on. I have spent many a long evening enjoying this record and I believe that most opened minded people would agree that it is a fine example of late 1960's proto-progressive music. This forms a perfect pair with Fools Mate although it is not quite up to the very high standard of studio craft of that brilliant set. The production is good for its time but lacking a little by today's standard. A 4 star release, a good addition to any progressive rock collection. A very fine first album by a very important artist.
