I waited about a month to review this because of all of the negative reviews and it was just as I suspected. The directions clearly state that in order for this to work you need to either apply oil or water to the seal.The first few times I used it I just used my finger dipped in the coffee and ran it around the seal and it worked just fine. This became tedious so I applied olive oil to the seal with a cotton swab. This is definitely the way to go. I never washed the lid with soap and just rinsed it every day, and the mug itself does fine in the dishwasher, but I use non-abrasive liquid. When it started to take a little more effort to get the lid off (about 2 weeks) I re-applied the oil.I drag this thing everywhere; have dropped it, knocked it over, had it upside down in a bag, and it has never once leaked a drop. I will never buy another type of to-go mug ever. When this one dies I will buy another.I also had a problem popping the tab off the first time until I figured out you have to slide the little tab back, just FYI.
