Eight women from different walks of life come together in the English Lake District for a tough, week-long survival course. Amongst them is thirtysomething Fran (Julie Walters), whose wisecracks mask an often lonely existence. Living together in the single dormitory, the women form some unlikely friendships as they learn to cope with life's tribulations.

Julie Walters plays a good role!
I gave it to a friend. My ex wife was one of the ladies who went on the First Ladies outward bound course. I wanted to show I wasn’t bad husband as I encouraged her to go on the course and looked after the children, while she was away.

If you love Julie Walter's get this film
Several women of varying ages, from late 20's to 60 something have enrolled in an outward bound course as they feel there's something missing in their mundane lives & they need to restore their self esteem. They all have different reasons for feeling the way they do although the youngest member of the group believes she is there just to give moral support to her mother whose idea it was for them both to take the course. The film follows the group through each challenge watching them bond or not with each other. It's funny & sad & moving & a delight. As always Julie Walters delivers a fine performance, as does the rest of the cast, not a weak performance from anyone. Just a note to say there is full frontal nudity including Ms Walters (wow) in a group shower scene towards the start of the film & later when night time skinny dipping in the lake. This is another example of what the British film industry is extremely good at.

Brilliantly funny film
Brilliantly funny film. Julie at her best. Sad and poignant at the same time. The film is about a great of women from all walks of life on a kind of retreat but team bonding course. Great finale. I loved it.

OK
It's OK as a light view, but rather contrived - a party of women in the great outdoors struggles to complete an assignment, getting to know each other in the process. The 'disparate group revealing secrets in adversity' is rather hackneyed and I couldn't care about them all that much. I would have liked the estimable Janet Henfrey to have had more to do.

Exercise in Group Dynamics
Really good movie about ordinary women doing extraordinary things. This film is a witty yet thought-provoking take on those 'let's find ourselves' experiences that, for some reason, some of us need to explore. Ever been on one of those enforced and truly dreadful "team-building" events with your job? Watch this and rewind.

The memory cheats...
I bought this because I remember watching it on Channel Four back when it was made. I think it does have a great message, and that the performances are interesting and the characters are memorable. I just think that maybe there are some inexplicable edits on this DVD? Bits that I thought I remembered don't seem to be there, and there are bits of the plot which don't make sense because of it...like the zipwire at the end (shh, spoilers). But it has a fantastic cast (sixties Doctor Who fans avert your eyes though!) and if you were a feminist in the eighties, it will make you sigh at how many backwards steps the modern world has taken in terms of female (and individual) emancipation. Might be lending this to some of my twenty-something colleagues!

Poor quality
The video quality was poor to the point of being irritating. Fortunately I had seen the film when it first came out so this video was just prompting my memory. It seemed to be a copy of a copy and so on.
