what is the difference between seeding and breeding cultures?

Seeding cultures are comprised of hundreds of springtails mixed in an organic substrate. The organic substrate (together with the springtails) is added directly to your habitats substrate. Breeding cultures are also comprised of hundreds of springtails but the substrate is lump hardwood charcoal where the springtails breed more readily. Simply tap the springtails from the charcoal to the desired habitat. Breeding cultures will continue to breed in perpetuity if properly maintained.

How do you properly maintain the rest of the springtails?

About once a month put some raw rice (12-15 grains depending on size of your collection) in the container with the springtails and lightly moisten with distilled water spray . The rice will look pretty gross in a few days but they will eat all of it.

How many should you put in? And how often?

As there are hundreds of springtails in the culture, we recommend putting 1/2 the culture into your habitat and measure the results while continuing to let the other 1/2 of the culture breed.

No live springtails

There was not a single live spring tail in the container that arrived. I didn't find any dead ones either. It appeared like a small container of moist compost.
