The Chronicle of Western Costume from the Ancient World to the late Twentieth Century

Basic book, but it gives a rough guide to how fashion changes through time. It would be great for a youngster who is interested in these things, it just doesn't offer quite enough for anyone who is seriously interested with just eight images of men and women in one outfit each from four different countries in every time frame. There are no children and, with only one outfit for each, it offers none of the variety of style I was hoping for.

Bought this for relative who enjoys making their own dresses and fancy dress costumes. She was delighted, and actually we found it really hard to wrap because everyone wanted to read it first. It's a fascinating book.

This is useful book for learning about costume in the past. the pictures are well drawn and clear with a little description about when and where they were worn. This I found to be very useful and it's in chronological order so it's possible to see how clothes changed within the a century. so I'd definitely recommend this book if you want a brief but accurate overview of the changing fashions over the last 2000 years.

It's an amazing reference book of colourful illustrations and details! The best thing about it, is that it included not only English and French styles, but also Italian, Greek and Dutch etc and etc! Very much a dictionary of western costumes! Highly recommended!

Avery good survey of western costume with good illustrations and informative text. Also very good glossary. Some ancient periods need revision to bring it up to date
