Plenty of firm cushioning and still stable for walking and running
I have been recovering from plantar fasciitis and needed a shoe that was neutral, stable, zero drop, and cushioned. After reading lots of reviews and based upon my own experience with Altra shoes, I chose this Via Olympus for a great price on Amazon. I read lots of reviews claiming the shoe ran small, ran narrow or had a big arch support, and yet I still ordered my usual size 9 Medium width. I can attest that the shoe fits perfectly with thin or lightly cushioned socks. It's no more or less narrow than the several other pairs of Altra shoes I've had over the years. In fact, it might be a tad roomier. I can't understand the arch support claim, as there is actually very little arch support in these shoes or the inserts that come with them (I use a PowerStep orthotic in mine new Altra shoes, which provides me with just the right support for helping with the plantar fasciitis problem). These shoes have lots of stack height, yet the cushioning is firm while still being comfortable, and the shoe is stable. It claims to have a "rocker" design, encouraging good toe-off, and it does that, too, although it's not terribly noticeable. The shoes fit very comfortably for all-day wear. I loosen up the laces near the bottom a lot, then tie a half not around the tongue loop that the laces pass through. This isolates the forefoot of the shoe from getting tighter, so I can tighten the top of the shoe snugly (see attached photo). Lacing the shoe this way allows for free toe movement, while retaining overall stability. Great shoe!

Altra for the HUSBAND WIN
I bought the Altra Men’s Via Olympus for my husband, and he hasn’t stopped raving about them. He says they’re incredibly comfortable right out of the box—no break-in period needed—and they provide excellent support for his feet and ankles, especially on long walks and hikes. The cushioning is top-notch, yet the shoes still feel responsive and not bulky. He also loves the wide toe box, which gives his feet plenty of room to move naturally without feeling cramped. The grip on the soles is great too; he’s worn them on trails, pavement, and even some slippery surfaces, and they’ve handled everything well. Durability seems solid so far, and they still look great after months of use. These shoes have quickly become his go-to pair for everyday wear, running, and outdoor adventures. Highly recommend for anyone who values comfort, support, and performance in a quality shoe!

Best running shoes ever
The best running shoes ever. Made to the true shape of the foot with a wide toe box! The best!

Need a wide option....
Love the natural foot form of the Altra, but these particular models don't have a wide option. It rubbed right on my right foots pinky toe joint & hurt so badly. I think my right foot is a bit wider than my left due to a break, but the only thing this shoe needs is a wide foot option, then it'd be perfect.

Like barefoot but with cushion! Altras all the way
Like barefoot but with cushion! Altras all the way! Room for your toes for natural movement and a secure mid foot! Mesh uppers that breathe. Lightweight and has a comfortable underfoot feel.

They are like running on squished marshmallows…
I ordered the Altra Via Olympus road running shoes to evaluate them against my go to max cushioned Hoka Bondi 8. This is the first iteration of the Via Olympus and it has their original foot shape fit which is their widest fit shoe. I wear a 10.5 2E US size and recently picked up a pair of Provision 7’s which have the standard foot shape, but compared to those the Via Olympus feels like a 4E wide to me. Out of the box the Via Olympus weighed in at 321 grams and 333 grams respectively. I was quite surprised by that deviation between the two shoes. Remarkably a recent pair of my Bondi 8’s 10.5 2E US weighed in at 332 and 338. The foam does feel firmer than my Bondi 8’s but definitely plusher than the Provision 7. The tongue is very thick, and the ankle collars are very thick and well-padded also. I've taken them for a 30 minute walk on the treadmill and a short run. The cushioning is much firmer than my go to Hoka's and I was feeling it in my left forefoot. The outsole rubber looks to be less than the Hoka Bondi 8’s but around the same as the Asics Novablast 3. I hope to get them out for a run on the concrete to report on their feel and grip. They are feeling much more like they’ll end up treadmill only shoes. Couple runs now outdoors and they feel like compressed marshmallows. The Altra EGO™ MAX midsole feels nothing like Hoka’s plush foam. In fact it doesn’t even feel as soft or responsive as the foam used in the Altra Provision 7.

Best shoes for me ever
I have tried so many running shoes it’s cost me a small fortune! I started wearing these almost a year ago and what a difference it made. I’m a waitress and also work another job on the side. I usually do 15k -20k steps a day. I was having shin splints and my feet would ache so bad I would soak them at night in cold water. I always order these before a wear out the current pair so I never run out. Expense yes but worth every penny! I figured it cost me about 5 dollars a shift. Not bad at all. LOVE THESE SHOES! Something else I worked with was the perfect fit. I have had broken toes and sprained ankles so many times and I have a high arch and instep, I have worn women’s wide and larger sizes all my life but finally I tried a men’s 9.5 and it works perfect for me!

Do not size up from your normal Altra size
I have many pairs of Altra shoes. I ordered this one a half size up after reading reviews. Too big. I ordered a second paid in the right size, my normal Altra size, and they work better for me. As for other reviews that mentioned the sole being stiff and noisy, I had no problem with it. Perhaps what they say is true but it wasn't too a significant degree for me personally. I love the max cushion and use these shoes for running a loop that is half on the road and half on a trail.

Good running shoes for runners with wide feet.
Why did you choose this product over others?: Needed a wide toe box and other running shoes had given blisters. Done a few weeks of running and no blisters.
