Why is it so hard to close the spout?

I don't know, mine is the same but it works and I figured it would get better in time or break. One or the other!

It is sealed tight. You could leave a little water in with the beads and store them. Just make sure the lower nozzle is closed all the way.

How long can you store the gels in the water? Do they have to be used in a time frame or will they get soggy or unusable ?

You can leave them in a sealed container and they won’t go bad. If you leave them in an open container they will evaporate and shrink but you can add water and they will return to full size again.
