A little silly but fun.
A good story but I wish Gaius wasn't such a nice guy. Wasn't always so serious. Maybe a little more like George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman". Not a coward but a little more superficial, lazy, and lascivious. Someone who shows up and may get undeserved credit, but is likeable. Juggling the affections of multiple women. Maybe not adhere so strictly to an oath. I know flying Cahokians is very unlikely but it is fun.

Best series in years for me!
Book 2 of this series of 3 kept the momentum begun by the first, and made a perfect bridge to the last one of 3. Full and rich in imagery, this alternate reality story is 100% believable. I, for one, am delighted with Mr. Smale's trilogy, and heartily recommend it. Based on historical ac curacies, this tale is engrossing and immersive. Usually if I make it through the first book of a trilogy, I'll try the second. Most times I disappointed. This time was the exception, as this story, and the way it was told, is exceptional!

Better than the first I'd say, but the third should be awesome!!!
I loved the first entry in the trilogy, but I'm a huge Roman history buff so I'm pretty bias. Like some others have said this one starts a little slow, in fact I remember thinking maybe I wouldn't be able to get into it and was a little disapoinrted. However after the first few chapters it drew me in and I couldn't put it down, there are some nice twists here and there and this book sets up the third one nicely. Really looking forward to that one! It will be off the wall.

Highly Recommended
I found it to be a very interesting, and bought the sequel before I finished it. This book will grab your interest and hold it to the very last page.

Outstanding
Breathtaking and completely absorbing in its breadth and detail. From a concept originally explored in short story form, the Author has created a compelling and thoroughly enjoyable re-telling of history in a way that is totally believable. The characters are so well developed by now that it really feels as though we know them as friends and it's been quite an experience, sharing their further adventures and once again, that feeling of having the ground taken from under me, when I find I've just read the final page. Darn.........roll on the third and final chapter in this amazing trilogy.
