This says it needs 23cm clearance in the loft, please can someone confirm that when you push up to release it doesn't go over this.  Thank you

No. The design incorporates two links, one on either side. The top of each link is attaced to the top of the ladder. The other end swivels where it attaches to the loft. As you stow the ladder the link arches back (so allow for the arch) and the ladder stows above the downward hinged loft hatch.Problems that I have are: ladder failed to retract properly and needed exchanged; difficult to insulate loft hatch since ladder stows into the space above the hatch; not all of the dimensions of the ladder provided by manufacturer so difficult to design detailed installation taking account go height of ceiling and thickness of ceiling including insulation and determining exactly where the ladder would land on a fairly compact landing.Hope that this helps.

My loft entrance is  W50cm x 70cm will this fit?

my ladder dimensions are  W 44cm  and  when in up position overhangs the loft opening by  59cm  so this should fit your loft opening of
W 50cm x 70cm

Compared to a normal aluminium sliding 2-section ladder, is this telescoping one really preferable?

This is an old question, but deserving of an answer - way back in the early 90s my dad had his loft boarded out and got the standard 3 part aluminium ladder for it.

It was awful to use felt rickety and because of the 3 sections slid out so rapidly that fingers were at risk. But at that time there was nothing else.

My last house had big enough bedrooms for a full conversion with stairs.

Ive moved and this ladder is easy to fit, i am the wrong side of 50, it slides down slowly and is far more solid as you use it than the aluminium 3 or 2 part ones.

It is inevitable there will be a trade off with more weight because its design is more sturdy.

My loft entrance is 58cm wide by 56cm will this fit?

I would say that because the ladder drops down in the entrance but stores in the loft space where it needs room (measurement given by Youngman is 2.6m from floor to floor e.g. loft space floor level and not floor to ceiling as most might think. Because of he way the ladder is fitted you will need more room on the climb side than 58cm or 56cm. I had the same loft opening size that you have but now have 58cm (W) x 72cm (L) and the ladder stores at one end of the L opening, and I fitted a new drop down hatch that is hinged on the same end that the ladder stores. In my view you will need a bigger opening that is a small job if your joists run aligns with the L then you can just move a noggin back 14cm to 16cm to give a 72cm l opening. If you leave the opening at the size you have it may constrict your getting into the loft whilst carrying stuff (am a big chap so that was important to me).
