Great Reference Book!
Bought this and the author's "California Desert Byways" book and have now been bit by the travel bug! Hopefully, we'll have a chance to use this in the near future. For reference, get yourself a good set of USGS Topo maps and GPS. The maps in the book are good to start with but you will need more detail.

A handy reference for future Eastern Sierra adventures and camping trips
It's been lots of fun to read. Will use this to plan future trips to the Eastern Sierra. I like to cross reference potential campsites in Moon California Camping: The Complete Guide to More Than 1,400 Tent and RV Campgrounds (Moon Outdoors) which has more camping information.

Tony Huegel is my new backcountry biway spirit guide!
Go to Mammoth and 395 often and this is a GEM--I might rate this the best guide book I've probably ever purchased. Only thing that could improve it, would be marking natural water sources along the biways, as everybody loves a cool, or hot dip in these areas and they are overflow-ith with them.Thorough and informative, I started to get nervous when I wanted to do backcountry drives that aren't in this book actually, but at the same time I feel more confident adventuring, as his information on how to properly backcountry drive was enlightened to those less seasoned. Highly recommend if you want more out of your trip, than what the crowds are doing.

Interesting Book But with Very Limited Information on Suitability of Byways for 2WD Vehicles
For some this will be an excellent book that gives you a guide to many wonderful drives in some of the most remote parts of the Sierra. It’s big flaw is that it does not fully address the issue of the quality of the roads on these Sierra side trips. Leaving aside the fact that the book was last published 14 years ago, and roads may have fallen into disrepair or been improved since, this book provides no indication of whether a particular road trip requires a 4WD with high clearance, or TWD with high clearance, or is a passable road for most 2WD vehicles. To me this fatally negates a book that could have been incredibly useful.

Because you never will say, "I wish that I had less awesome trails to check out in California."
Great supplement to Charles Wells' book on California off-road trails. I even emailed the author to get a copy of another one of his books that was crazy expensive on Amazon and he offered to send me a signed copy with notes/updates on the trails for a much more reasonable price.

Good Book for Beninners - Gutes Buch für Einsteiger
Some interesting byways but because of the bad maps for each (only layouts) trail only 3 Stars. There are no really details in the maps and the scale is often incorrect. Backcountry Adventures (Peter Massey) is much better.
