was a real joy and asset to me
The ancient eras and periods were laid out clearly. I learned a lot about why some creatures evolved and understood why some didn't. My father has passed away, he was a hobby paleontologist for over 40 years. We lived in Wyoming and I grew up with fossils. I have a shark jaw that is approx. 2 " and has layers and layers of teeth. There wasn't any identification on it so I don't know where it was found. My father did a lot of excavation at the Kemmerer beds, but once he passed away, no more excavation was allowed.I have catalogued all of his collection and am finding many rare fossils were in his possession and have gone unidentified. The layout of my cataloging (along with photos) was created following the eras and ancient periods in your book. I really appreciate how clear your book explains and illustrates the "Big Horn Basin" region. Born and raised in Laramie, I was exposed to many extraordinary fossils.Your book, Ancient Wyoming, was a real joy and asset to me. Thank you!

Great Intro to Wyoming historic geology
This is a great book about Wyoming historical geology! It contains 12 episodes of easy-to-access formations, with each containing photographs, a painting, an explanation of the scene, a description of the geology, the significance, a timeline with geological time information, the paleogeographic map, a stratigraphic cross-section - and all in just 4 pages per episode! This book also includes an appendix with further reading, Bighorn Basin museums, relevant museums outside the Basin, and basic guides on what/how to visit. Now I want to visit Bighorn Basin - after reading this book, you may want to too.

Informative!
Really enjoyed learning more about the fascinating history of this part of my state! Will take this book when we're out exploring/camping in the area this summer.

For the Young (or Young at Heart) Paleontologist!
A very delightful (and rather large) book with wonderful illustrations of prehistoric landscapes, chronicling the changes of the central Wyoming area as recorded in the state's geology. Very informative, nice overview of the region, and perfect for younger proto-paleontologists! Adults will be quite pleased by the book as well. A few of the paintings could've used more wildlife (though some landscapes were pretty barren!), so I suspect some children might be bored with those particular ones, but spectacular photos of geological formations generally made up for these rare views.

this is the most amazing book that explains and illustrates in beautiful pastel paintings ...
Wow, this is the most amazing book that explains and illustrates in beautiful pastel paintings all the geological stages of Wyoming. Please....someone do a book like this on Utah. I now have an idea what a "shallow sea" might look like and many other wonderful conceptions. Thank you! I'll treasure this forever and am giving it as Christmas gifts to my geologically challenged but curious friends.

Wyoming geological history encapsulated by he Bighorn basin.
Excellent brief descriptions of 12 geological snapshots covering 540 million years of Earth history. Wonderful companion to "Ancient Denvers", also by Kirk Johnson. Beautiful artwork. Paleographic maps by Ron Blakey.

This is a good exposition of the geographical history of Wyoming. I'd like to see a more detailed study now.
