The perfect kitchen companion
I purchased this knife about a year ago, and it has become my favorite kitchen tool. It's amazingly sharp and just the right size for so many of my slicing and chopping needs. The true test of a sharp knife is how it cuts a tomato, and this one slices through any size tomato with ease. It's great for cutting vegetables and for slicing meats. A perfect kitchen companion!

True all-around knife
All-Clad has combined German steel with Chinese manufacturing and American marketing to bring this 5" serrated utility knife to Amazon. Both the handy knife size and serrated edge make this a true all-around knife in the kitchen. The All-Clad 5" serrated utility knife arrived nicely packed in its own slipcovered presentation box. The knife is surrounded by paperboard and has a paperboard protective sheath over the blade. The rear of the box advises handwashing and immediately drying the knife after use. Good quality cutlery should not be placed in the dishwasher. Laser etched on one side of the X50CrMoV15 stainless steel blade is "All Clad". On the reverse in tiny letters is HU04/22. Unsure what that means. The black thermoplastic handle (POM, or polyoxymethylene) has three rivets on the full tang blade. The actual blade is 5" L, with a total knife length of 9+". The knife is very light and fits the hand nicely. My thumb sits on top of the bolster and my index finger sits comfortably under the heel of the knife. Slicing raw chicken, paper-thin tomatoes, celery, and mincing garlic cloves were all equally easy with this utility knife. It also slices bread nicely. The knife is sharp and ready to cut out of the box. Unfortunately, the manufacturer provides no instructions on honing or sharpening the blade, even on their website. Also, given the high cost of this knife, I would have expected a plastic sheath for the blade at the very least. The manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty and I look forward to many years of use with this serrated utility knife. It would make a welcome gift for any home chef. I award it 5 stars along with my recommendation.

Sharp in Both Looks and Action
My knife block holds an assortment of higher-end knives made by the likes of Zwilling and Wusthof, plus I’m rather persnickety about the tools and equipment that make it into my kitchen. Initially I was a bit dubious about whether All-Clad could make a knife that would fit in with the rest of the German-made crowd, but I’m pleased to report this 5-inch serrated utility knife passes muster. This knife has a good heft to it, making it feel solid. The slightly oval-shaped handle means it’s less likely to slip if my hand is wet – something that can be a big problem with slick, rounded handles. A full-length tang signifies steps were taken to make a sturdy knife that seems designed to last a long time. In use, it’s super sharp. For me, one of the true tests of how a knife handles is how it deals with delicate ripe tomatoes. When I use this All-Clad knife to cut tomatoes, it doesn’t seem to slice them – it’s almost like it glides right through the flesh with minimal resistance. BOTTOM LINE: All-Clad makes some stellar Multi-Clad Pro stainless steel cookware, so I’m glad to see they’ve continued their winning streak with knives. This 5-inch serrated utility knife is incredibly sharp, and it’s the perfect size for slicing tomatoes, bread rolls, or sandwiches. When I placed my order, the knife was retailing for about $60 – a tad bit steep, IMO, even with its fine properties. But at the time of this review, it’s listed at $40, a price-point that seems like a screaming good deal.

Excellent tomato knife, a bit overpriced I think
All-clad is a brand many people know, and they are known for quality. I think this is an excellent knife for some tasks (as serrated utility knives tend to be). Specifically this shines at tomatoes and similar soft items. You can slice them razor thin. Luckily this knife came in nicely sharpened, since serrated knives are hard to sharpen at home. It has solid construction, full tang, comfortable handle. It's a good length and feels good in hand. The reason I'm not giving this 4 stars is that while it uses German steel, it is made in China. They push the German steel thing, with a little asterisk for the made in China part. For the price ($60 at the time of this review), you can buy a well known German brand knife of the same type that is actually made in Germany. I understand saving money by manufacturing in China, but that savings is not being passed to the customer. If I was purchasing this, I would probably purchase an actual German made utility knife. Still, an excellent knife.
