you can actually hear the mattress alternating (each bladder inflating and deflating) when it is in the alternating mode. so you know it's doing it's job. the pump is the quietest pump I have ever had, I have had many pumps. I find it difficult to put the mattress cover in the washing machine, because of the safety blow rails attached to the mattress. I haven't found a way to remove the air tubes in the safety rails, to put it in the washing machine.
