The Art and Technique of Sumi-e Japanese Ink Painting: Japanese ink painting as taught by Ukao Uchiyama

The book is good on the cultural significance and spirit of the art and in connecting to Uchiyama. The Figures and reproductions are not very good and the instruction falls short of what is available in other books. Interesting, but not a good reference book for Sumi-e. There are many better books at Amazon. In learning Sumi-e it is important to be able to copy the teacher's work or the work of the masters with some detail. That is how it has worked for centuries. Then you can do your own. This book is not in that mode of education. Sumi-e is generally in conflict with Copyright Law but the good books give explicit permission to copy.

I bought this book for my 16 year old granddaughter who is very interested in things Japanese. She has been learning the language and learning to make its characters with a brush. I thought that given these interests, she would be open to studying a new art form, and she was very interested to receive this book for her birthday. It's presentation is engaging and demonstrates the simplicity and subtlety of the art. I highly recommend this study of painting with ink.

Is not a bad book, but if you want to actually learn to paint, it isn't very detailed regarding technique. It is well written and informative, but you could not learn from just this book. Try to get other books additionally to this one.

While the author does a good job explaining how to paint, the style of his paintings is not typical for sumi-e and not something I want my works to look like

Somewhat disappointing, as there are too many black and white illustrations, rather than coloured examples. The techniques where clearly explained.
