Uppercut (John Milton Book 22)

Milton and Dawson At Their Best
In this latest Milton saga we find him in Ireland working as a cook, his fallback job while on the run from a government that would like to eliminate him.. The kitchen is in a high end hotel owned by a prominent mob family and is the vortex for rivalries and intrigue that explodes drawing Milton into the drama. From his first Milton novel, I've been enthralled by Dawson's story telling. The novels are really well written and literate with a pacing that keeps the reader engaged. That first novel "The Cleaner" I really couldn't put down and I bought it thinking it was about something quite different."Uppercut" continues the development of Milton who focuses on his mission of atoning for the bad and distasteful things he did while on the service of Her Majesty working for Group Fifteen. While he's older he is nonetheless lethal and able to convey that to those who'd consider crossing him. He's more thoughtful and has better control of his emotions and weaknesses. In this story he has to contend with government agents closing in on him as well as two different mobs all while protecting a frightened little girl with communication difficulties.Highly recommended. If this author is new to you his works are centered on four or five main characters and in some books characters form other books show up which I think is a wonderful aspect of Dawson's oeuvre.

exciting read
Dawson at near best. Liked the tangential plotting and clever connections to the whole story line, although Milton gets lost and story almost devolves into an English gangster tome. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Marc Dawson’s colorful descriptions of Britains gangs too. This begged for 5 stars but I’ve read Dawson’s very best.

Dawson never fails to entertain
his stories have caused me to lose more sleep than my teenage children. Milton is every man’s hero. this is book 22 and the stories do not get stale.

Another great John Milton book
Uppercut is another great book in the John Milton series by Mark Dawson. In this installment, Milton is in Dublin looking to clear his name with Group, and stumbles upon problems (as usual) for which his unique talents are necessary to save a little girl - keeping her safe from gangsters and corrupt police, until she can be reunited with her family.Plenty of action, as usual.Enjoy.

pretty good
Losing a bit of steam but still better than most in this genre. I still think it’s worth reading, waiting for the next one

Milton is the best.
Impeccable read. Well written and paced as always kept my attention cover to cover. John Milton doing all the same things and I absolutely can’t wait for the next one. Best series I’ve read to date.

Don't get much better
It really doesn't get much better than Mark Dawson's John Milton.Have read them all(only a few authors that each book gets better)..Never disappoints... great characters...also like that Milton gets involved helping other people while always working with his own problems..start from the beginning book if you can...never disappoints..the kind of books that you start reading and difficult to put down... Enjoy!!!

Another fabulous Milton offering
I've read all the Milton books (and all of Mark Dawson's other books) in order, and I'd recommend doing that for the pure enjoyment that one gets from doing so. That said, each can easily be read as a stand alone and I imagine that as much enjoyment would be gotten from it.These books have just gotten better and better unlike some of the other tired old 'formula' approaches that have eventually left me so unsatisfied that I've stopped reading the series. Each Milton is well scripted with amazing plots that weave and tease and Uppercut is a fine example of this. To a pedant such as myself, one of the most satisfying things is the beautiful use of grammar and words. Not a mistake to be seen throughout. The worst thing about a Milton book is finishing it and having to wait for the next one. A sincere thank you to Mark Dawson for yet another wild ride and roll on Bloodlands!

*John is in a Fix*
This instalment feels like an appetiser ready for the next book. Following on from book 21 ‘The Sandman’ John has been betrayed and The infamous ‘Group Fifteen’ who he was their former number one, think he is responsible for the deaths of some of their agents. The agent who is guilty told the group that John was responsible. She is now a double agent, the group are unaware. Her motives for her actions are to do with her personal life. Now, John is trying to find out more about her but ends up in trouble himself while he is supposed to be lying low. He becomes embroiled in a turf warMilton has a near miss but I fear for what is to come in book 23 ‘Bloodlands’ this may be his most dangerous task he is about to undertake…. I wonder if he will ever be able to clear his name….
