Penny Dreadful - Season 2 [DVD] [2014]

The sublime and the ridiculous.
There were many times throughout this amazingly creative epic that my gothic heart swooned as its inner self was laid bare there on the screen. This beautifully crafted series seemed to speak at times directly to me, as I guess many others like me also felt. 90% of the time the story never allowed itself to slip into the obvious, twisting and turning in little ways that made me smile. But as it drew to a close it was as if there was a change in writing style. Characters suddenly changed beyond recognition, which is fine in some respects, as it shows that we are all susceptible to change under stress, but in many cases these were just what seemed like deliberate reversals simply to carry the story line. And then of course the series suffers from the almost inevitable curse of the horror genre, where having spent almost all the story building up some immensely powerful being, there has to be an ending where it is defeated, or at least subdued. And this always contradicts all previous demonstrations of its supernatural powers. There were also a couple of instances of Lovecraftian indescribable and unmentionable horror, that had been expertly crafted throughout the move, only to be disappointingly revealed and diminished in the last episode. To my mind the picture held far more horror unseen than when revealed, and I have never seen a werewolf movie before when I was more intrigued by what I did not see than what was revealed. But again this was destroyed in the last episode when IMHO there was an example of one of the worse looking example of were makeup ever seen, far better to leave us imagining the horror. And then there was the talking mannequin, dear oh dear. Up till then the witch dolls were brilliant I was totally impressed with this great twist on the old witch poppet. But it seems in the end, in an effort to avoid having to design yet another party pooping reveal of “The Master”, they plumped for what might have seemed on paper like a great idea, but in practice looked like exactly what it was, a simple ventriloquist dummy with flapping mouth talking with a voice over by Vanessa. Extremely disappointing. So finally, for anyone who has bothered to read this far, let me finish by repeating that this is a stunning piece of work, I loved almost every moment of it except those mentioned above. But it was so good, that I can easily forgive it those parts and humbly admit that this is almost perfect Gothic horror.

"Another Feast for the Senses"!!
OH! If only Sam Mendes made Bond Films like this, he would be up in with the Gods Like Cameron. After fairly disappointing reviews of Spectre, I decided to spend my ticket money on the second season delight of "Penny Dreadful". that had been sitting in my basket for a week. There is little you can say more to give this series the Merit it deserves. After so many so called horror / Gothic lame releases last few years, Apart from Van Helsing (kate beckinsale) that was quite good, Penny Dreadful, just has this effect on shouting Noooo!, As one episode finishes, but another one starts. Oh! The wickedness of it all, All human emotions and the spiritual mind is spilled on the screen like Dorian Greys Sumptuous balls. Oh! the sheer joy of London of old stripped bare, as well as visits the country where Witches still live. How many times do you tell a character not to go there, dont get involved with her, immersed in the possible consequences? Not giving anything away, but thats Just what Sir Malcom does, gets seduced by the dark forces of some one he thought as a friend. Surprising depth from (Billie Piper), now "Lilly", who as the Irish lass before, had some critics going on about her accent, here, shes being swept along with all things new, Unlike The Monster (Rory Kinnear) Lilly soon starts to blend in with society, but shes not as nice as her maker thought she would be. Im on disc 3 at the moment, I really dont know where the Monster's future lies yet. Yes this is an 18 certificate Series, its not for anybody under that age, its an extreme outing of fear, Lust, strong sex and language, the Unknown, many scenes of XX rated debauchery, heterosexual and Homosexual, and Voodism that includes snatched babies isnt for the faint hearted. I urge parents to be responsible and keep this series away from under 18s. Fans are very excited that "Showtime" has decided to start filming a 3rd series in 2016. "A Feast for your Senses"!!

Horror at its best
This series has become a firm favourite with me and my boyfriend. Although we have arrived a little late to the party, we have binged the first season before devouring this one. It is a shame that only 3 seasons were made, as it seems to get better with each passing season. As before, the cast all put in fantastic performances. Each character has developed, with something to either love or hate about all of them. What I particularly like about this series is that they have kept the sadness to the tale of Frankenstein's monster. Suffering the initial rejection of his creator, and then the unkindness that humanity sometimes bestows upon him, Kinnear perfectly portrays his dream of acceptance and companionship in a cruel world. With the creation of Lily in this season, I was interested to see where this would then take us. Whilst I was able to see some developments, I was also happy to see that there were still some surprises.Really looking forward to where season 3, and these characters, will take us next.

More Gothic Mashed Potato
Some great ideas and sequence but also some less successful ones. The Frankenstein plot is by far the least interesting. But Ives stands out in virtually all scenes.

Another great season (prior season spoilers)
+++Warning, this contains minor spoilers from season one, but no major season two spoilers++++The second season of Penny Dreadful is in part a continuation of the first season's storylines and in part a reset for the show, introducing new storylines. Again the characters get individual story arcs that then intertwine throughout the season. Ethan's story arc is the aftermath of the inn massacre that we see him wake up from. What happened is not exactly hard to figure out, but he finds himself pursued by a Scotland Yard police inspector. Vanessa's story arc involves a coven of witches led by Evelyn Poole, the professional spiritualist introduced as Madame Kali in season one. We also get more of Vanessa's backstory and find out how she got her powers, mainly through a flashback episode in the third episode of the season. Frankenstein is still being threatened by the creature, which introduces a story arc involving a character played by Billie Piper that bleeds over into Dorian Gray's story. For those who get the Blu-Ray, the A/V quality is again outstanding. There are some extras, but they are not very extensive. First, there are a series of video production blogs that run for 2-3 minutes, then there is a feature about the fans of the show, a feature about the history of the occult, and character profiles. Unfortunately, there is no extensive behind-the-scenes documentary or any commentary tracks.Overall, the show continues to be very good. It is well written and very well acted. Eva Green is again strong in the lead role and shows her acting range as she can go from being a proper Victorian-era woman in one scene and stark raving mad in another. And the costume and makeup department does a wonderful job making her look like a supermodel when Vanessa is normal to someone that looks like she lives in an alley in a box when Vanessa is out of her mind. Timothy Dalton does a great job as Sir Malcolm, dealing with his failings as a father while also trying to help Vanessa avoid a similar fate to Mina's. The show is very dark (as you would expect) and has a lot of violence and sex. So, if that turns you off then you definitely want to skip this. It deals not only with supernatural themes of witchcraft, werewolves, vampires, and the like, but also incorporates religion and religious themes into the storylines. So, it is not a show that will appeal to everyone, and it is definitely not family-friendly. But, if you are a fan of 19th-century horror stories, this is definitely worth checking out.

The Bloodborne Equivalent Of A Macabre Horror Masterpiece. Part 2.
Arduous, Malleable and Transfixing is how I would describe Season Two of Penny Dreadful. The second season has permanently cemented why this is my new favorite show of all time. I'm mesmerized by anything and everything Horror related and this is right up my alley. I will begin my review and I have my review for Season One on other review sites entitled "The Bloodborne Equivalent Of A Macabre Horror Masterpiece." if you're interested in checking it out. I will delve into the story which takes place literally the next day after the Season One finale. I won't divulge what happened as that would ruin the first season but without saying much it picks up very quickly with new threats and predators around every corner. The deadliest of them all would be each other and how they intermix with one another and each of them having their own agendas and emotions which play a ginormous role this season. I loved the story this season even more so then in S1. I will now move onto the acting which as in my review for S1 I cited that the acting is what really enticed me to keep watching. I never in all my years have seen such a cast of actors and actresses that could make me get so emotionally invested in each individual actor and actress as I have with this show. I should say that is also due to magnificent writing by John Logan who is also the creator. I will carry on with the action and drama segment of this review and as it stands S2 is paramount to any other show that I have ever watched and I watch a ton of t.v. along the lines of GOT and The 100 to name a few. The action is just as brutal and relentless as S1 and far more demonic. The drama is far meatier then the action but that only lends a helping hand for when the action does finally unfold throughout the season. I will round out my review with the Cinematography and Location which were superfluous and I mean that in the most genuine way possible. I mean everything is shot with such authenticity and care that you truly feel like you're there yourself. Bravo to the production teams that deal both in the sets and the decor. I will close out my review by saying that if you have not seen this show yet then please don't dawdle. You need to go out and buy the first 2 seasons or watch them elsewhere but buying them would support this much beloved and prodigious television show. I promise that if you love anything drama and or horror related then you will not be disappointed in the least but you will be pleasantly delighted.

Monster Soup
This is one of T he most innovative film series I’ve ever seen. Bringing the classic written characters like Frankenstein, Jekyl and Hyde, Dorian Gray, a werewolf, Witches (Necromancees) and Dracula together in one story, was refreshing.
