Drawing Masterclass: 100 Creative Techniques of Great Artists

The ultimate drawing guide for students.
There are many books on this subject out there but this one really gets down to the nitty gritty. The references are pertinent and outstanding, there is nothing better than learning from the masters, and this book will open the door to more questions and interest in those masters. I am a retired high school art teacher and wished that I had this a few years earlier as it would have set my students on fire. Throw all the other books out and buy several copies for your classroom, or for every student, it will change their lives.

Few usable suggestions
I like the idea of teaching drawing by showing how masters did it. Some other authors have taken this approach and produced very useful books: Robert Beverly Hale and his "Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters" is a very good example. The commentary to the illustrations in this book is long on biographical details and short on actual practical suggestions, which at most occupy half of the commentary to each image. The author also took the unusual step of frequently pointing out what is wrong and needs to be avoided rather than things worth imitating. As a teaching approach, this is known not to be very effective: in the same way as "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" does not achieve its intended effect, pointing out mistakes to avoid is not as effective as pointing out things one can do. But, I have to say, it very funny to hear a virtual unknown point out faults in the work of everyone from Leonardo down to the present day.For what you will learn from it, the book is absurdly overpriced. Borrow it from the library if you can, or get Robert Hale's book mentioned above with no regrets.

Wonderful book, original and inspiring, beautifully done
This is a beautiful and informative book, both interesting and insightful. The author covers such a wonderful range of artists and works, with a knowledgeable, clear tone. I really love the unique and original approach and structure, different to the many other drawing books I have, and very refreshing to read. There is so much useful and valuable content that I can see it will be a favourite source of reference for time to come, not only a delight to look at and read.Particularly helpful to me were the the very enlightening and practical parts about each work that include commentary and advice/tips on form and space, composition, sources and materials.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an engaging and stimulating observation of the history and analysis of important and influential works, along with artists both established and learning. Truly inspiring read.

Great book but arrived with a torn page
I really liked the book. But as I skimmed through the pages, I found out that one of the pages is actually torn. There were no texts on the torn part but just annoying as the photos on both sides of the page were cut. I would like to return but it’s a hassle for me. I’ll probably have to rethink buying future books from Amazon especially those books I wanted to be part of my collection.

This is good value.
A lot of books on technique lack useful information. This book has good quality reproductions and useful and relevant information. Combine it with Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Hale and you have an excellent resource on drawing at a good price. Recommended.
