Tom TierneyEmpire Fashions Coloring Book (Dover Fashion Coloring Book)

45 French fashion inspired designs – printed on both sides of the page
The media could not be loaded. This is an older coloring book by Dover. The copyright date is 2001 but has a statement that it was manufactured in 2016. I assume that means that the paper is more like what we expect today versus what was available when it first came out.The designs are printed on both sides of the page with blurbs of information printed at the bottom of each page as well. This is consistent with what I expect from these older books. What is great, besides the beautiful designs, is that there are 45 different fashion plates. This is a lot more than I expect from these older Dover books (which more generally seem to have 30 pages.)The designs are of both men’s and women’s fashions and are based on French fashion of before and after the Revolution and of the clothing of the Napoleonic era. Not only did the Revolution have its effect on the political position of the world, it had a huge effect on the clothing people wore. With regards to women’s fashions, there was a slim down of the silhouette, lower necklines and much thinner (even translucent) fabrics used. You can see this fascinating change in this book and, if you are so inclined, color the fashions to suit your own imagination. The designs are well done and are detailed without being overly intricate. The fashion plates are as such without any form of background. This is what in this coloring book:45 French Revolution and Napoleonic era designs with writing at the base of each page.Printed on both sides of the pagePaper is medium weight, slightly rough, white and non-perforatedGlue BoundDesigns stop well before the binding area.Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paperWater-based markers spot through and/or leave colorful shadows on the back of the pageGel pens and India ink pens leave colorful shadows on the back of the page. India ink pens can bleed through in spots if you apply heavily or use multiple coats.Colored pencils worked well with this paper. Both oil and wax-based pencils provided good pigment, layered well with the same or multiple colors and blended well using a blending stick. Hard lead pencils did not dent through the page.If you choose to use any medium other than colored pencils on the pages of this book, you will probably find bleed through or colorful shadows on the design at the back of your working page.

Good purchase
I'm always looking for new coloring books and I adore Tom Tierney art. Very awesome art, the paper of great quality but be forewarned, that if you use markers as I do, they will bleed through.

Beautiful pictures with details
Luv this period of time the fashion is great and the details are many and beautiful. This coloring book adds the time period with hints of colors to use for example like soldiers wore blue jackets, black hats in some cases and woman wore pink tights and white gowns etc. A description is given to each clothing. Using color pencils and gel pens is a must to bring out the details. I don't use crayons which I have many but for some reason I truly luv using Prismacolor pencils and gel pens to bring out the best.

Entertaining and Educational
This is my second Tom Tierney book. There are dates and an informative write-up under each drawing and he includes the colors of their day. I bought two and in one book I use my own felt pen color choices and in the other book I use the colors of his choosing. The paper is marvelous. It's thick enough so it doesn't bleed on through to the next page. I highly recommend it.

Educational
This is a good coloring book from which to learn more about Empire Fashions. There is some very good information about the fashions on each page, and the last few pages are dedicated to small accessories. These are excellent for practice. The paper is typical Dover Publication paper, like the coloring book pages that I coloured as a child. Each page is double sided & you can see the lines from the next picture in those that have been drawn with heavier lines. In this book, there are not too many of those.Recommended mediums would be crayon, colored pencils, & pastel. All markers & most gel pens will bleed through the pages. Do not use watercolor paints or pencils. The same goes for acrylics. The pages have a very rough tooth. The pages can be removed from the book by utility or exacto knife for ease of placing in a binder with page protectors.Recommended for children

Nicely Drawn, Beautifully Reminiscent of Jane Austin's Era
Beautiful artwork, challenging patterns and fun trims!! I absolutely love the Jane Austin appeal of these plates! Coloring them should prove to be very relaxing, as there is nothing I find more intriguing than old world fashion!

Excelente libro para colorear para adultos.
Excelentes dibujos, con información sobre cada uno de los trajes (en ingles).Recomendable como todos los libros de Tom Tierney.Dibujos por ambas caras, por lo que lo mejor es utilizar lápices de colores.

Directoire, Empire, Regency, napoleonisch...

The media could not be loaded.

Another fantastic book from Dover
Another fantastic book from Dover. I have great joy in painting these and learning about the history of fashion. The only thing I didn't like about it is that as much as Tom Tierney is very good artistically, the dark or black parts are already coloured in black, or the area where you darken is crossed with lines and is very dark, so shading for yourself you cannot do. That is the only downfall. Tom Tierney or Dover should not blacken the black parts nor use dark lines for the darker shading as it ruins the picture. The pictures are both sides of the paper. The paper is good quality, though I have found that the colours will just run or smear on the next page's picture. I have not used paints, I have used F.Castell Polychromos, and limited Derwent Inktense because of the smearing. I use other pencils also, but it still smears. I have had to staple plain paper on one side of the page so the colours don't smear onto the next picture. I have a number of Tom Tierney books now and they are all the same which is something Dover should look at.
