The Legendary Typewriter Tape: 6/25/64 Jorma's House

Jorma and Janis before they were famous, what more could you wish for? Jorma's guitar playing is not much different to early Hot Tuna (just a little more polished) but Janis is amazing - real authentic blues with none of the histrionics of later efforts. As for the typewriter, it's barely noticable. A wonderful release.

95年発売のジャニス3枚組ボックスセットと、そこからのセレクトされたベストCD 18の祈りの1曲目に、2人の演奏が入っていました。元々、ヨーマの大ファンだった僕は、当時、狂喜したものです。その時の演奏が、フルアルバムとして登場するとは思わなかった。チューニングや2人の話し声が入り生々しく響きます。2人とも若々しく、ジャニスのボーカルは、オーティスレディングのライブに影響された後の、あの声を絞り出すような絶叫節でなく、黒人ブルース調でもなく、フォークシンガーのような歌い方。ヨーマもアコギフォーク調のブルースギターで、当時のフォークブームを反映してますね。まるで、ニューオリンズのバーボンストリートあたりのストリートミュージシャンの演奏を聴いてるようなリアリティがあり、最高。同時期の、ブリティッシュインベーション。すなわち、ローリングストーンズ、マンフレッドマン、ムーディーブルースのようなポップな味わいのブルースでなく、次に来る時代を予感させます。2人で、ホットツナをやっていたら？ジェファーソンエアプレインの2代目女性シンガーが、グレーススリックでなく、ジャニスだったら？と想像を掻き立てられます。

I always hesitate to buy these types of things because while usually they're of some historical import, the performances have nevertheless rightfully stayed in the can for years. Happily, this is not one of those occasions. Like the recently released, excellent "The Lost Album" by The Smithereens, this is one I will play more than once or twice.This short album opens with some mundane chatter and, indeed, a typewriter clattering in the background... some guitar tuning...and then THAT VOICE.Of course, this is a younger, less-fully-formed Janis. Decidedly more Port Arthur, Texas than San Francisco at this point. However, the first few bars of "Trouble in Mind" caused immediate goosebumps. It's like an archaeological dig that yields something special and significant. The voice doesn't have the pain and power as it later did, but it's the voice, and it will make you smile, because we know the magic yet to come. The kids on this tape have no idea what awaited them less than a decade later.
