Philos Shogi Set With Raised Wooden Board and Storage Drawer

This dark wooden board with printed grid looks good with the contrasting light coloured pieces. The kanji on the pieces are clean and easy to read on both sides. The tray is a good size and the magnet that holds it works well. The only downside, which lost it a star, is that the pieces in the rear ranks are perhaps a little oversized and jostling for a place. Perhaps that's a metaphor for nobility...

As you can see in the pictures, all pieces are accounted for (40 in total) and the tray has two magnets either side so it does not slip out when being carried/stored. The quality of the wooden board is very good. Looking at it at an oblique angle the checkerboard lines could possibly be hard to see in certain light conditions since the board is a dark but beautiful colour, but for me it's fine.The pieces are smooth to the touch which is good compared to my authentic Japanese Shogi pieces I bought over a year ago. Some of the pieces such as the pawns are irregular at the top but that shouldn't be a bother to playing a game of shogi. To end the review it does come with an instructions booklet on how to play in English (on the 3rd page) and in various languages.
