It works, right out of the box
You don't have to tinker, but I would recommend flashing the stock operating system onto a better quality sd card. You can install custom operating systems but you don't need to. It's a great little unit and I'd buy it again if I had reason to. About the feel of a Gameboy Pocket, but with the ability to play games up to PS1
