After several hilarious through-the-years examples (the Civil War-era Fredric March runs off to battle rather than endure his wife's nagging), we are brought up to 1942. This year's edition of Fredric March is a gubernatorial candidate, preparing to wed snooty socialite Susan Hayward. A bolt of lightning strikes the tree where Veronica Lake had been barbecued three centuries earlier, thereby freeing the spirits of Lake and her warlock father Cecil Kellaway. March meets Lake when she materializes in a burning building, obliging him to save her life. The revivified sorceress does everything in her power to force March to fall in love with her, so that she can make his life miserable. Gradually, Lake falls in love with March, which rouses the ire of her ever-besotted uncle. Lake imprisons her uncle in a bottle, genie-style, then proceeds to try to win March's affections by arranging for him to win his election. Alas, this exposes March to accusations of fraud, and this, coupled with Kellaway's escape, threatens to send Lake back to oblivion. But at the last moment, March declares his love for Lake, which turns her into a mortal, albeit a very happy one.
