Monsieur Verdoux (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Wow! Another amazing achievement by The Master. I started collecting a few years ago and decided to check out Charles Chaplin on a whim. I think I expected something similar to Buster Keaton but that is not at all what I have found in Chaplin's movies. They are funny to be sure but they are also warm, compassionate, fiery and sometimes shocking.Every film is quite different and Monsieur Verdoux did not disappoint. Chaplin plays a master manipulator who uses women and then...well anyway. It's all rather allegorical and he has a great speech at the end (kind of like in the Great Dictator) to sum it all up for us.It was just too bad that the speech offended certain powerful people and led to the end of his tenure in America/Hollywood. This is considered perhaps his greatest film and who knows what he might have done next (maybe Limelight but you know what I mean, had he stayed in Hollywood).What a thrill it has been discovering Chaplin. His movies are 100 years old but still relevant and always entertaining. I personally like The Kid, The Great Dictator, Limelight and of course Monsieur Verdoux!

It is the greatest film of Chaplin, one in which he does not play a character who will at once win the sympathies of his audience. Just the contrary. He plays a serial killer, well, a lady-killer to be more precise. The humour is black enough for times that have just witnessed, the second world war, which ended with the mass killing of civilian populations by nuclear weapons. The very same nation that deployed these weapons, drove out Chaplin as an immoral communist sympathizer. One of our greatest artists takes on a civilization that wanted to destroy him and much else that was invaluable. His speech in the court is a remarkable document in the history of ethics, in some ways comparable to Socrates' famous last speech.The Criterion Collection deserves to be congratulated for its 2K restoration and for its excellent selection of extras that include one of the finest pieces of writing on cinema by André Bazin on Monsieur Verdoux.

This is one of Charlie Chaplin's masterpieces. He has all the silent movie gags in this dark comedy. I found myself sympathizing with Monsieur Verdoux because he is doing this for his family. The ends justify the means...... After all, we are all Helocks, aren't we? Americans claim to live in a "Christian" Nation and yet we start wars all over the world and justify it in our own minds. Wars for profit and for corporations: It's the American way. We are all hypocrites to each other and to ourselves. Charlie Chaplin's message is clear:"One murder, a villain, Million (murders), a hero." But, do you have the guts to admit it?

I loved this because it showed the genius of Chaplin. It was funny and also conniving. I liked the constant train riding and trying to figure out the man who was so driven to stealing $ from older women.

Monsieur Verdoux is a great picture and the Criterion Blu-ray version is beautiful. The picture and sound are crisp and clear, looks like something from the 80s rather than the 40s. A great story (from an idea by Orson Welles) and Chaplin is at his best along with other very good actors. The menu and extras are the normal Criterion type. I am delighted with the quality of this version, wish we could get the same quality in many other older films.

Who knew that a movie about a serial killer could be poetic and insightful. I skipped over this movie many times since I do not like violence. I finally decided to watch it to make my Chaplin library complete. It was great. Not really any emphasis on violence.....seems to be more about hard times and bad luck. Many humorous parts. I definitely recommend it to all those Chaplin fans out there.

I was intrigued with this movie when I saw it on TCM. I purchased this for my son who is also a classic movie enthusiast. This was a different venue for Charlie Chaplin which I found compelling. I will probably order three more; one for my archives and for my sisters.

Absolutely perfect in every possible way

Charlie Chaplins 1947 entstandener Film "Monsieur Verdoux" wurde in seiner Entstehungszeit sehr kontrovers aufgenommen und schnitt bei der Kritik und beim amerikanischen Publikum miserabel ab. Eigentlich logisch, denn Chaplin präsentiert - Storymässig angelehnt an den berüchtigten Frauenmörder Landru - einen sehr sanften Serienmörder, der auf seine Mitmenschen charmant, semsibel, menschenfreundlich, naturverbunden, gütig und auf die Frauen romantisch veranlagt wirkt. Der etwas seltsame Zeitgenosse liebt Blumen, Tiere und Kinder und in einer Szene rettet der mehrfache Mörder eine Raupe, bevor sie von seiner eigenen Schuhsohle zerquetscht werden könnte. Chaplin zeigt gekonnt seine typischen Gesten und Gesichtsausdrücke aus seinen Stummfilmen, allerdings in einem schwarzhumorigen Kontext und macht sein Publikum vom Anfang an zum Komplizen seiner abgründigen Figur. Chaplin war zu dieser Zeit einer ungewöhnlich feindseligen Behandlung der Presse ausgesetzt, während er für den Streifen warb, und während der kurzen Spielzeit kam es sogar zu einigen Boykotten. In Europa wurde der Film um ein Vielfaches besser aufgenommen. Meines Erachtens ist es sogar einer der besten Filme des kleinen Tramps, auch wenn in "Monsieur Verdox" die junge Marilyn Nash diese Rolle übernimmt. Sie ist ein gestraucheltes Mädchen, dass im Gefängnis war und vom Serienkiller auggelesen wird - er will an ihr eine neue, erfolgsversprechende Giftmethode ausprobieren. Doch das Mädchen überrascht ihn, denn es gibt Parallelen. Sie ist genauso tierlieb wie Verdoux, denn unter ihrem Mantel hat sie ein herrenloses Kätzchen versteckt und sie liebt. Und zwar ihren Mann, ein Invalide und würde für ihn selbst ihr Leben geben. Verdoux stellt den vergifteten Wein weg, denn auch auf ihn - im normalen Leben - warten die gehbehinderte Frau (Mady Corell) und Kind. Seit 3 Jahren - kurz nach seiner Entlassung bei der Bank - hat er sich auf das Metier des Blaubart und Frauenmörder spezialisiert, er ist mehrmals verheiratet und führt nicht nur ein Doppel- sondern gelegentlich ein Vierfach- und Fünffachleben. Wenn er eines seiner vermögenden, weiblichen Opfer geehelicht hat, dann wird es immer irgendwann Zeit finanziella abzusahnen und das passiert meistens dann, wenn die Ehegattin das Zeitliche segnet und hier hilft Verdoux natürlich mit. Nur bei der eleganten wie ordinären Anabelle Bonheur (Marta Raye) beißt er sich die Zähne aus, die Frau will und will nicht "verunglücken". Daher sucht er ambitoniert mit Mary Grosnary (Isobel Elsom) ein willigeres Opfer...Einer meiner Lieblingsfilme, der zwei Jahre später entstandene britische Klassiker "Adel verpflchtet" erinnert etwas an Charlie Chaplins sonderbaren und makabren Serienkillerfilm der anderen Art. Am Ende des Films darf der vor Gericht stehende Übeltäter sogar ein Plädoyer für seine Taten halten: "Ein einziger Mord stempelt den Menschen zum Mörder... aber Millionen von Morden machen ihn zum Helden. Die Maßstäbe rechtfertigen alles" so seine Schlußfolgerung. Neben der bereits beschriebenen Szene mit Marilyn Nash, gibt es weitere tolle Sequenzen. Zum Brüllen komisch ist Verdouxs Versuch seine kratzbürstige Anabelle während einer Bootsfahrt zu ertränken oder strangulieren. Chaplin hat hier sehr stark auf einen dunklen Humor gesetzt, der den Film zu einem besonderen Klassiker macht. Für mich ein Kultfilm.

Ottimo film di chaplin, anche se non eccezionale, ed in effetti un po' sopravvalutato dalla critica. Non c'è nulla di sbagliato, ma a volte il film è un po' fiacco: una durata inferiore di una ventina di minuti avrebbe giovato. Piacevoli scene, alcune assai divertenti. Eccellente la qualità del DVD.

Sehr Zufrieden...ein grosses Lob an den Verkäufer..vor allem für die Zuverlässige Erhaltung dieser schönen Dvdmit diesem Film möchte man KEINEN Mord enschuldigen,vielmehr sollte man sich auf die paradoxen Widersprüchen besinnen ,die für eine von Gier geprägten Geschäftswelt sprechen....oft sind es leider die Unstände die Menschen zu schlimmen Taten verleiten..
