How many trays come with this purchase?

This comes with 8 drying trays, 8 fruit roll liners, and 8 mesh liners for drying herbs. This is a great product and works very well.

Is the top open in the middle? wanted to make sure i wasn't missing a piece. i've used friend's nescos and excalibers and both were closed. thanks!

Yes. Every tray and the top has a hole in the middle. That is where the air escapes from.

how much does it cost to run?

It is correct that is is a 1000 Watt device, and electricity here in Central Wisconsin is 11.5 cents/kilowatt hour. So if it was running full-tilt for one hour that would be 11.5 cents. BUT, this is thermostatically controlled and the temperatures are variable from, what? 95 degrees to 145 or something like that? And you can expand the number of trays up to 30 from the 8 you are provided and you don't need to use all 8 trays. So the answer is that your mileage will vary. A lot. But the worst it could possibly be running it for 24 hours with a bunch of trays full-tilt would be $2.76. Only way to know for sure is to use it and connect it to a Kill-A-Watt or some similar meter and record how much power it actually used.
