I purchased these and added them to my classroom bubblegum machine. To my delight, the students liked them a great deal and several students expressed joy when a 'stripey one' came out, though some students preferred the red-hot cinnamon, the bright pink or the mixed fruit flavors I also had mixed in, and there was some trading that took place. This led to a splendid teachable moment about economies. I also found them quite palatable myself, especially while sipping a Fresca to cut the sweetness a little. The watermelon flavor is authentic, the texture is very good, and though they cost a bit more than some gumballs, the novelty of the stripes and the popularity of watermelon makes them very nice. Also, if you are a melanin-challenged person who teaches in a diverse school and certain stereotypes about watermelon and who likes to eat it happen to come up in class, pointing out that you, yourself, like watermelon and ordered the Stripey Ones because you, personally like them, that you, personally, like fried chicken -show of hands, who likes fried chicken? *all hands go up* "Okay. So that stereotype is just picking on CERTAIN people for liking things that *counts the hands* EVERYONE likes." *raised eyebrow* "And what is the word we use to describe such a stereotype? Starts with R?" *kids answer correctly, while giggling, beaming and pronouncing you 'real.'* "Okay. That solves that, then. I'mma have another gumball. Come on, stripey one! ...Aw! Pink!" And no, it doesn't count as Critical Race Theory. It counts as Culturally Responsive Teaching. That's the one we ACTUALLY do. People got heckin' confused about that. All us teachers ever wanted was to get the Cathode Ray Tube TVs replaced with something from newer than 2004, but does anyone ever listen to us? Heck, no. Buyin' our own supplies out here...
