Produces different espresso, not better espresso
Before purchasing the IMS big bang basket, I was using the IMS precision basket; They both produce very different but equally enjoyable shots of espresso. The big bang basket seems to pull out quite a lot of acidity in its shots comparatively to the precision basket. This isn't particularly pleasant to my palate as I don't enjoy acidic coffee. I would prefer a touch of bitterness in my shot of espresso rather than a touch of acidity any day of the week (as traditional as that may be). What I do enjoy are some of the more complex flavours that the acidity brings with it. Before using the IMS big bang basket, I had never truly tasted any of the tasting notes that I saw on a bag of coffee beans, but I can actually taste dark chocolate, berries, stone fruits, etc. by using the IMS big bang. Some days, it might be worth it for me to experience the touch of acidity just to also experience the true flavours of the coffee, but most days I'll use the IMS precision basket as my default basket. I really do detest acidity in coffee.Additionally, I have noticed that the IMS big bang produces what feel like thin shots. I think this is what coffee snobs call body? But it doesn't feel like espresso shots from the IMS big bang really coat your tongue with texture. It makes the flavours more obvious to your tongue but the texture is less thick and syrupy. I'm not sure if this is related in any way but shots from the IMS big bang just don't seem to stand up to milk very well either, so lattes are very dull with this basket. Here's my recommendation:Get the IMS big bang basket if you:- like acidity over bitterness- really value tasting those origin characteristics of your coffee- have no intention of making milk-based drinksGet the IMS precision basket if you:- like bitterness over acidity- really value texture and boldness in your coffee- intend on making straight espresso or milk-based drinks
