is it best to get the 6" or go ahead and get the 12"

Obviously 12" gives you more range, but I bought both. It seems most times when I need to measure accurately, I don't go beyond 6" though. I actually have the 3", 6", 12" and 18"...all have their place.

can I use it with unit cm

The ones I have are only in English units not metric

Can you use this ruler for making patterns on paper?

I think it can as long as that paper is taped in place and near the edge of the table so that you can slide it along to make its marks.
