Here's a Cowboy Junkies disc worthy of the group
I've ordered three of the "Cowboy Junkies" discs recently. This one is the winner. The other two I'll never listen to again.

Disc Two is no more!
I guess I didn't read the footnote regarding "while supplies last", but I was very disappointed to find out that Disc 2, or "'Neath Your Covers" was not included with this album. One Soul Now is OK but nothing like the older works (I'm a huge Trinity Sessions fan).

Junkies at their best!
"One Soul Now" is the 10th album released by the Canadian alt-rock group Cowboy Junkies. This disc rates right up there with some of the best work CJs have ever done over the years. Having been a fan of the Junkies from the beginning it has been interesting to watch how the group has developed and grown over the years with their sound. Their talent and genius grows with every new release. They are known for having a dark sombre sound to the point of depression. While there may be some truth to that I don't think Cowboy Junkies are that a depressing a group. Quite the contrary. They can and have released some upbeat tunes and certainly you can find some upbeat songs on this album. "Stars Of Our Stars" being one good example of that. As always Michael Timmins has a way with song writing that really is more like story telling. There is no better person to sing Michael's stories then his sister Margo. She is without a doubt one of the more underrated singers around today and she helps bring these stories to life. One important note. When "One Soul Now" first came out in 2004 it included a bonus ep disc "'Neath Your Covers, Pt 1". They only included this ep with the album for a limited number of copies. It is most likely you would not find a copy of this ep with the album now. However if you did find these two discs together don't hesitate to buy the album as this is a hard to find record now.

They just keep
I'd like to say that the Junkies keep getting better and better. Nope. And this is a good thing. I need some things to pop up and bite me with a beautiful consistency. One Soul Now is a breath of fresh musical air with Margo's sexy, sedated voice and the other Timmons rocking out in their fuzzy, bluesy, river rat kind of way-sometimes I hear Neil Young in those licks and other times just a bar band flipping off the gloss of over-production and jamming out. Some tunes on this one are downright bouncy. I don't find the story telling of the lyrics quite up to par. The last song about an indescriminate God seems too contrived and musically not strong enough as the other nine songs. And why not put the extra disk on the first disk and give us our money's worth?Just once I would like to see a real fine Producer grab Timmons by the-um-throat and say let me produce an album, push you a little, tell you this song isn't strong enough, let's feature Margo on this one a little more. You know, this song sounds too much like that song from...It won't happen. I love them though and when I was walking the beach last week my two little kids filled my shorts with shells from the Ponce Inlet jetty and while the Junkies new one was blaring through my IPOD I started singing, "Rally Round the Family! With a pocket full of shells!"I think that's the way these Timmon's would be if you were to step in try to change them in any way.So be it. I'll buy everything they put out.

Better with time
One Soul Now actually sounded great to me the first time I listened to it back in 2004. Then, after a while it sort of fell off my rotation. Recently I picked it back up and it sounds better than before. I don't try to imagine how music "should" sound, or get freaked out when a band's newer work doesn't sound like the previous stuff... and this CD does depart quite a lot from earlier stuff by CJ. Yes, there are slow, dirgelike songs with low, sad, even despondent lyrics... but hey people, this is the Junkies we're talking about, not Blondie... they have made no secret of their propensity toward gloomy music. It is well-done gloomy music, and not every song is a melancholy lament. To the reviewer who took pot-shots at "Simon Keeper"... well, actually the lyrics are rather clever, and they get the point across quite effectively. I don't like this CD as much as Pale Sun Crescent Moon or the incomparable Trinity Sessions, but it is one of the top three CDs in CJ's library according to... me.

Interesting
Interesting while not the best place to start if exploring the recording of The Cowboy Junkies. The Limited edition album with a second disc featuring songs from the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen and Neil young is interesting and I hope they release an album of interesting cover versions soon. The second album in this case warranted an extra star.

'neath your covers
