A real croud pleaser!
My soon to be seven year old son and I went to see this yesterday and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! The room was just short of full with people of all ages. When I looked around everyone in the room was having the same reaction to each scene from laughter to the edge of the seat and everything in between. The busy young star Josh Hucherson, who you'll recognise from Bridge to Terabithia and Zathura, stars along side some new and older faces that you may recognise from older films. His performance doesn't disappoint. He plays Sean, son and nephew to two of the senior members of Dogpatch, a struggling Firehouse and the house of Engine 55. When a flurry of fires happens in the area Sean's uncle is killed in the line of duty at one and Sean's father starts to suspect something sinister not realising how his son has been affected by the tragedy.Meanwhile our supporting K9, the spoiled movie star dog Rexxx, is getting lost from the set of a movie he's staring in after a stunt goes wrong. After a narrow escape from the dog catcher he hides in a condemned building which catches fire. Rescued by Engine 55 our leads (no pun intended) are reluctantly thrown together. Cue friendship, heroism, some doggy mishaps that we've seen before in other doggy capers but who cares and some help from CGI and we have some very funny scenes!!All in all solid performances, good if not entirely original script and story, but still a fantastic watch - most definitely one for the family friendly shelf and all ages will enjoy it. Mine's on pre-order. Enjoy!

a very bright canine finds a more authentic life
Dewey is the Firehouse Dog of the film, and a star in his own right as Rexxx, who does stunts in films and is meant to be a celebrity. One day he falls out of the sky with no parachute, lands in a lorry of tomatoes and ends up in a fire station; the fire chief has a 12-year-old son, Shane (Josh Hutcherson), who bonds with the miraculously gifted dog. The film has quite a lot of plot but really it is the relationship between these two that is at its heart. It also has some easy-going portraits of the other firefighters, placing emphasis on community; the film touches on serious themes as well, Shane having lost his mother at two and his uncle much more recently. The plot also takes in arson which raises moral issues that go rather beyond the family film context; however it deals with them quite well for younger children. Dewey is very endearing, and apart from one or two jokes of dubious taste, the film can be recommended to dog lovers - it is one of the outstanding animal films. There are some touching scenes between the father (Bruce Greenwood) and son, very well acted and perhaps affecting for younger viewers as well.

Fabulous Film
I had seen this film on TV and decided to buy it for my 8-year-old twin grandsons. They have been going through a difficult period of changes in family situation and I wanted to take their minds off their little worries and lose themselves in this exciting and funny story. We all settled down on the sofa under a blanket, feeling secure and comfortable, and they were totally absorbed in the movie from start to finish. They loved everything about the film, and when I asked what their favourite piece was, they said it was the bit at the end when the dog came to rescue the little boy. They also said that it was the best film they had ever seen!

Very good
I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD and it was very reasonably priced. My 5 year old grandsons enjoyed the doggy bits but lost interest at all the talking bits - I felt it was for older children. We saw the trailer for this one on another DVD and that is why we purchased it
