This is one of the greatest tv dramas ever made. It's ability to send you into suspense is unreal. The story is of Dexter, a guy who works in forensics for the Miami Police dept. with a specialism in blood spatter analysis. He disturbingly loves his job as it fuels his obsession with blood. He is also secretly a serial killer, although he only kills people who have done wrong. He therefore appears as a kind of vigilante, who ironically works for the police. It's an interesting premise which shows us how someone who can't help enjoy the sight of blood and death has to deal with himself in a modern society. There are many times when you think he may have just got caught but didn't. What makes it almarming in this show is that you can't help but like this guy and he is so nice to other people. However, he pretends this niceness. His foster father has taught him how to fulfil his disturbing needs whilst stil remaining an above board citizen. He kills criminals to fulfil his needs and studies blood spatter in a police station to fulfil his blood obsessions. The series main story arc is the quest for Dexter to find the alleged 'Ice-truck killer', another serial killer who catches the eye of Dexter and appears to know an awful lot about him. It's a great story which shows how Dexter gets slowly closer to finding this killer and at the same time the killer is unravelling Dexter's history within his crimes, making Dexter unable to assist int he police's unrelenting pursuit. He is in complete admiration and awe of this killer, who takes his equal obsession out on prostitutes. The story builds to an unforgettable climax with many plot twists. What makes the story so great is that it has so many different aspects. There are so many characters. There is Dexter himself who we slowly discover over the series and through his narration in a 'peep show' style inner voice. There is Rita, his girlfriend with 2 kids, who is ideal as she was a victim of rape and violence who never wants to have sex which suits Dexter as he has no interest for sex at all and having a partner makes him fit in with society. Her abusive husband is also imminently coming out of jail. Dexter's foster sister Debs who has ambitions to climb the ranks in the police force like her father. We also see Dexter's foster dad Harry, who is dead in the timeline of the series, in flashbacks whihc gives us insights into why Dexter is how he is and how he learned to fulfil his urges. In the police station there is Maria who hates Dexter's sister but fancies Dexter a bit and has all sorts problems with the authorities and constantly aims to crack the case to save her job. Then there is the amazing sgt. doakes who knows something is up with Dexter and always has an eye on him seeing him as rather disturbed. The comical Batista, Doakes' partner, is also great always trying to get his old marriage back on track but never succeeding as he comes across as a ladies man and Vincent, a fellow forensics friend.Great characters and great stories which all intertwine beautifully. The only criticism is that some of the middle episodes aren't quite as good as the opening and closing ones although they are necessary to establish the great array of characters, and it's healthy that the show need not rely on seeing Dexter every 5 mins. Also, as the show deals in a great amount of suspense and tension, the first time you watch it will always be the best. But it is still brilliant and a must buy for everyone.

Unexpectedly gratifying... if in a slightly 'icky' way!
I initially had reservations about this series, thinking it would be an episodic progression of gruesome murders, weakly bound by a 'cop show' set-up.Instead I found it to be a wonderfully understated, morally ambivalent programme, with a triumphant performance by Michael C Hall.I had seen him before in Six Feet Under, in which he plays a rather beleagured, introverted, frustrated gay character. Some of these personality traits are seen in Dexter too, and acted to perfection by Michael Hall. The 'moral ambivalence' angle is dealt with very well. What Dexter does is undoubtedly abhorrent - he is a serial murderer, yet he comes across as affable, amiable, even good! What are we meant to think? Are we meant to sympathise because he is the narrator, or are we, just like all the other characters, being duped by his facade?Gripping viewing - I can't wait for the 2nd series.

Dexter: The Loveable Killer
This show is one of my all-time Top 5 favourites the reason being is because this show Outstanding!! The show is about Dexter the blood spatter analyst (analysing blood in crime scenes to give an idea of who the killer was e.g. height, direction of attack.....). But he's also one Americas biggest serial killers, only the people he kills are killers themselves that have escaped justice (not found guilty in the courtroom or wasn't caught in the first place) This allows the audience to except Dexter because if he was going around killing children and other innocents we would all hate him but he doesn't so in a way he is a twisted hero that delivers a fatal dose of justice. And gradually as learn more about Dexter we grown to like the guy even if he's an anti-social, no emotion murderer. The main plot of this season is the hunt for another serial killer who goes by the name of The Ice Truck Killer whose signature killing method is to kill his victims in a extremely cold environment to stop all major blood from spattering everywhere so when the bodies were discovered there was not a single drop of blood. This method hugely impressed Dexter and soon he began tracking down the killer, even though he was under his nose for most of the way. Towards the end there is a shocking discovery and a very good ending. As the story develops we are show Dexter's past as it is very important to the plot further down the line and it also shows us the standing stones of Harrys Code (Dexter's adoptive father realises that Dexter has a dangerous need to kill because of his past and therefore he trains Dexter how to kill and how to get away with it too)What makes this so engaging is Dexter commentary of what is going on in his mind throughout the episodes, this gives an idea of how alien emotions are to killers and how every interaction he has with other people is completely superficial. The show is incredibly original (well the books are technically) and is a breath of fresh air among the crap TV that plagues the television industry. This is a show to die for ;)

It was recently recommended by a friend and so I took a chance ...
I had seen 1 episode on t.v. years ago and found it quite disturbing. It was recently recommended by a friend and so I took a chance and ordered season 1 and am now awaiting the complete series. Yes, it is violent and gory. Yes, I find it difficult to justify murder of even the worst criminals. It's still strangely satisfying to see the bad guys get nailed (or cut up).
