The New Jerusalem Bible: Study Edition

This is a fantastic Bible. The New Jerusalem Bible Study Bible was recommended to me by my parish priest during an RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) or Adult Confirmation into the Roman Catholic Church. He also recommended the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) for a good rounded view of the Scriptures. I like the NJB, it's compact and easy to carry and the textual notes are excellent. The Editors chose to refer to God as Yahweh (Hebrew word for God) in the Old Testament, for me, it gives the OT a slightly more authoritative feel. A bit like unedited, unadulterated & pure approach to the texts. The New Jerusalem Bible is a Catholic Bible, but from what I've read so far it doesn't appear exclusive. It's a nice version, affordable and compact enough to put into a bag and carry around. Some reviews mention the small font size. It is quite small but I don't find it difficult to read at all. The major drawback though is that this version is paperback! I can't see the book lasting very long without a cover! So far I haven't been able to God a cover that fits the copy. If anybody knows of one please let me know!

As a Catholic Bible, the NJB is the best if you like an excellent commentary with a Bible. Some of the print size is tiny though, and you need a magnifier to read the commentary comfortably. It was highly recommended to me by a well-respected RC Priest. I would like to have been able to afford the £55 for the hard-back edition, but I am getting along okay with the magnifier on the commentaries. There are so many different Bible editions that they are a maze to choose something. Not all Bibles are the same, some 'favor' a certain church's 'teaching'. The NJB is as far as I've been advised, the most accurate, the commentary scholarly and aimed at measured, Catholic study.

Excellent scripture resource and aid to ministers.t

I would only recommend the Standard Edition of this Bible because the notes are excellent and scholarly and aid understanding without being intrusive or doctrinally biased. The "Study Edition" has the notes but with very small and faint text which makes it hard to read. This translation is still one of the better modern ones. It generally strikes an excellent balance on the gender translation issue, although it questioningly has "spouse" for wife in the decalogue. It is not quite as good as its French namesake and has a few striking errors or bizarre translations (as most translations do). I like the fact it uses the original Hebrew names for their god. It doesn't translate the Greek "paraclete" as it doesn't really permit of a single translation. The language isn't always natural to my ears, for example the use of "manjack". Perhaps the worst is that it deliberately mistranslates fornication as "illicit marriage" in the sermon on the mount. This is why the range of translations we now have is so beneficial.

The New Jerusalem Bible Study Edition is ideal for the preacher, student and reader. The notes are in quite small print and not so easy for the older eyes. The packaging was poor and the book arrived with slight damage which was reported to Amazon - no response from them to date. G O

Extremely good study guide but the notes are so small in size that I have difficulty reading it even with my reading glasses.

Love this version. The numbering of verses is to the side, which takes a bit of getting used to, but it makes reading it flow more naturally

Dopo aver comprato una Bibbia di Gerusalemme priva di riferimenti incrociati, che sono per me indispensabili per l'uso che ne devo fare, ho trovato questa che è carina, un buon compremesso tra il prezzo e l'uso, se potessi ricomprarla prenderei questa ma con la copertina rigida. L'edizione è perfetta, ma ho paura che alla lunga la copertina possa rompersi, dovrò stare attenta ad usarla

I've read many versions of "The Bible". King James Version, New King James Version, the Spanish Reina Valeria version.... I've even read some books of Martin Luther's German translation of the bible. Of all the stuff I've read, this one is probably the best modern English translation with critical notes that I have found around. Unless you decide to learn Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Greek, Aramaic, and a bit of Latin for the ECCE HOMO part, you're probably gonna get the best English translation that is available out there with this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading a "Bible" translation in modern English.

my issue are the letters. cant read too small for me

There is no other bible with the info this one has. The only thing is the size of the typing, one has to use a magnifying glass to read it. But is just a minor problem compared to what is inside.
