Can you remove the plastic portion of the clip? When you remove it does it leave a hole you can use to thread the clip into some string?

I'm sure that you could remove the clip which is riveted to the plastic tab. This would provide a hole that you could use for a string.

How loose is the swivel portion of the clip?

They are sturdy enough to swivel... not flimsy. I have found them to be of good quality.

I want to use them outside on our deck umbrella. Will they rust easily?

They rust but not easily I put a cord across my front porch then hung signs on them during the pandemic of me not able to do much more to help this past year

Can you snap and unsnap the button to change ID?
