A 5 due to the subject matter.
The Chetsang Rinpoche is awesome and this book illustrates that, but the book reads like a first draft of a hagiography. The date of whatever is being mentioned is rarely included. Stating miracles as fact without any corroboration is tiresome, like trying to get fed by watching someone else eat. A good editor would have greatly improved this book.

Gripping and Playful
Having been in the presence of HH Chetsang Rinpoche he radiates like a full moon. His compassion and understanding of the human experience is profound and light. I found his story gripping and playful in the most dire of situations. I learned so much by what he chose not to do ...which helps me understand discrimating action. This book makes me so happy to have been in his presence and encourages me to plan to be in it more. Not a dull book on any level. People like HH Chetsang Rinpoche are super heroes in my eyes.

A fascinating biography of a Tibetan Buddhist lineage holder
Our Tibetan Buddhist here in Portland, Oregon, hosted HH Chetsang Rinpoche on his first official trip to the U.S., so I had met him both here and in the Bay Area. His life story is very different from most of the other biographies of great masters, as his refuge from the diaspora of Tibet was the U.S., rather than India, Nepal or Bhutan taken by other lineage holders. His biography was interesting, well written and provided revelations of his personal thoughts, despair and hopes for the future of the Tibetan people, their culture and, most of all, the spiritual tradition.

Great Account of a Living Master
After having read this book, and then meeting H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche in person, I can say from my experience that he is truly a living master. Not only is he a master of the Mahamudra and Atiyoga lineages of the Drikung Kagyu, but he has put a tremendous amount of work into uncovering and clarifying pieces of Tibetan history (which can be evidenced by the release of the English translation of his recent History of the Tibetan Empire, found here: [....]). What's all the more impressive, is that he lived in the U.S. for a period after he left Tibet, and even worked at a fast food restaurant. Not all the difference we might immediately expect from a lama held in the highest regard. In addition to being an account of the Drikung Kyabgon's life, it is an excellent introduction to what the Drikung Kagyu lineage of Buddhism is all about. This book discusses the history of the lineage, it's major meditation systems, and what it is doing today, including it's spread to the West. As a practitioner in this lineage I can say this book deepened my own understanding, and I would highly recommend this particular school to anyone in the West interested in Buddhism (it's pretty widespread too, there's probably a center near you!).Finally, this book is an inspiration to all of us to try to put effort into helping others, progressing along our own spiritual path, and ultimately making out lives meaningful. So buy this book, and enjoy!

If you have ever wondered what it was like when China invaded Tibet read this book
If you have ever wondered what it was like when China invaded Tibet read this book. It is a pretty matter-of-fact style, no drama; just the facts. The first two thirds are the best.

amazing, inspiring bio
Anyone who would like to read a first hand account of the Chinese Communist invasion of Tibet, this is the text. If you want to read an inspiring account of human strength and perseverance, this is the text. If you are a Vayrayana buddhist and want to understand your Lamas, this is the text.

Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche
This is an excellent biography of a young monk who escaped Communist rule in Tibet to eventually establish a Drikung monastery in India and become a world leader of Buddhism.
