I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!

I love this too often overlooked mid-period Janis album, and I love Janis. She had soul, wit, raunch, and bags of character, qualities denied to the majority of today's overhyped caterwaulers.This is generally a tad more restrained than her work with Big Brother & the Holding Co. What might arguably be lost in rawness is gained in sheer musicality. The soul and warmth of Janis's distinctive voice is still very much in evidence.The centrepiece is her tremendous re-imagining of arguably the best song the Bee Gees ever wrote, the much-covered To Love Somebody {Nina Simone did a superb version too}. You'd have to be a musical dunce to mess up such a gift of a song ~ the epitome of pop-soul ~ and she gives it her all.The final three songs {before the three very welcome extra tracks} are all wonderful: her own Kosmic Blues {a terrific song} followed by the moody Rodgers & Hart standard Little Girl Blue, and Work Me, Lord by Nick Gravenites. Janis sings her heart out on them, and I've got tears in my eyes just thinking about them.Make no mistake, this is as good an album as she ever made, and that's saying something.Still much missed. . .Great stuff!

I love janis and her musical legacy. But I have such a soft spot for this cd.it's my favourite janis cd and it's often overlooked. Great from start to finish kozmic blues is my favourite janis song and I love this cd

Excellent service as usual, Janis is excellant with this band put together by the excellent Michael Bloomfield and Nick Gravenities if you like Janis you will Love this.

Classic Joplin albums every body should have these in collection

Eigentlich wird dieses Album gerne als "erstes Solo Album von Janis Joplin" angeführt, doch ergab sich mehr im Nachhinein dann doch die Bezeichnung "KOZMIC BLUES BAND", denn immerhin hatte Janis mit ihr ihren Auftritt vor der größten Menge überhaupt ( Woodstock, August 1969); weiterhin spielte sie mit ihr das einzige Mal außerhalb von Amerika, nämlich im April 1969 in London, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Kopenhagen und Amsterdam - mit ungeheurem Erfolg übrigens.Durch die Hinzunahme von gelernten Profi Musikern und drei zusätzlichen Bläsern erhielt der Sound eine wesentliche Wende zum Soul und Blues und weniger Psychodelischen Anleihen.Janis, obwohl gesundheitlich schon längst nicht mehr auf der Höhe, zeigt sich stimmlich in absoluter Hochlage und obwohl das Album nur eine Single herausbrachte (KOZMIC BLUES), hätten es ohne Probleme mehere sein können.TRY JUST A LITTLE BIT HARDER ist der Pusher Song schlechthin und groovt ernorm. TO LOVE SOMEBODY in einer Art zu singen, wie es nur Janis' Blues Machine kann - wer die BeeGees mag, wird diese Version hassen, aber andersherum halte ich es für eine geniale Bearbeitung. KOZMIC BLUES sehr ruhig und nachdenklich, aber nicht minder intensiv. LITTLE GIRL BLUE ist sogar ansatzweise etwas wie eine Ballade, in der Janis sich halbwegs an ein original zu halten scheint - eine sehr schöne Interpretation. WORK ME LORD von Nick Gravenites ist ein Hammer Song, der Gospel, Blues und Rock vereinigt und wirklich kaum zu übertreffen ist!Als "Zugabe" gibt es herovrragend gemasterte Aufnahme aus Woodstock, nämlich SUMMERTIME, welches unglaublich gesungen ist und ein etwas überhastetes PIECES OF MY HEART, die jedoch beide beweisen, daß Janis' keinesfalls stocktrunken war und auch vom vielzitierten "Brechen der Stimme" kann keine Rede sein; schade, es hätten auch noch mehr Tracks aus Woodstock sein können...FAzit: Dieses Album ist ein "haben-muss", wer Janis liebt. Es sind von 8 Songs 6 Knaller dabei, ich erwähnte das melodische MAYBE vorher nicht, aber man sollte es zu den klasse Songs hinzuzählen. Die Bonus Songs sind beachtlich und insgesamt passen auch die Bläser sehr gut zu Janis' rauher und bluesiger Stimme. Ein Fehlkauf ist dieses Album nicht, ganz im Gegenteil. Ein umfangreiches Booklet runden das positive Bild ab.

Grande voce ma il disco mi pare un po' deludente, validi i brani originali (soprattutto a good man ) ma non capisco cosa ci azzecchino le cover diun brano doo-woop e addirittura di una canzone romantica dei bee gees, e poi quei fiati nello stile del pur grandissimo Otis Redding un pizzico fuo-ri posto mi sembrano, comunque che dire di un interprete del genere? Questo album pure coi suoi limiti è un pezzo di storia, ok il servizio.

Che dire, per me Janis Joplin è la più grande in assoluto ed ho, per questo, molti suoi dischi con brani che si ripetono tanto le sue interpretazioni trasmettono e suscitano sempre forti emozioni. Anche in questo cd, come nel cd dei Jetro Tulla (thick as a brick) la parte finale è parlata ma non me ne importa nulla! Lo consiglio!

No hay palabras para sentir este album, deben tenerlo ya!, blues muy potente, letras cósmicas y una voz que no necesita decirse más-...Es Janis...indispensable.

Disco muy interesante aunque en su día no tuviera la aceptación deseada.Absolutamente recomendable para conocer los distintos registros de Janis.
