Outstanding
This book does a great job of tying the early Discovery people with the Enterprise of Robert April, A young Jim Kirk, and a villain who will show up again in a Star Trek episode. On the way we learn about the values and motivations of Georgiou, Lorca. The books in this series are excellent.

Prequel to Original Series episode "Conscience of the King"
It's a clever premise for a Star Trek: Discovery novel, even if it does equal fan service to a certain point. The timeline works out so why not have two of the main characters from Discovery present at one of the horrors alluded to in the Original Series? It's a little convenient that both Lorca and Georgiou both ended up on Tarsus IV at that time but that's fan service for you.The author's bio says that he spent 11 years in the U.S. Marines and his appreciation for strategy and military procedure show up in this book. At certain points, it starts to become a little wordy in that regard and sounds less like a Star Trek novel. The novel does a decent job of patching a plot hole from the original episode as to why so few people had seen Kodos and why Kirk had to rely on a fairly primitive voiceprint reading to identify him. Kirk and Thomas Leighton make appearances as their younger selves.I'm about 40% of the way through the book at this point and it's well written, if a little dry and procedural at times.

Interesting back story
What a great read. I am a huge Star Trek fan that unfortunately have not been able to see ST Discovery yet. That did not matter in reading this book. You are told everything you need to know in this book. Dayton gives you a backstory to the characters that cements my wanting to try the series. It is a prequel of sorts to the TOS storyline “Conscience of the King”. It gives you the backstory in a unique and interesting way. Great characters both established in Discovery and new ones. Well worth the read.

Is this a DISCO novel?
The Star Trek Discovery streaming series is slowly developing its mythology within the already established Trek canon. This probably makes it difficult to find good subjects for these novels without tripping over what will be coming up in the streaming series. The first novel released was “Desperate Hours”. That novel is a prequel adventure with Captain Philippa Georgiou, Michael Burnham and Saru aboard the U.S.S. Shenzhou. The story takes place before the streaming series begins but takes advantage of everything that was established in the first two episodes. I really wish that they continued with more novels about the crew of the U.S.S. Shenzhou in the time before the Battle at the Binary Stars. This second novel is not as good as the first. “Drastic Measures” is set 10 years before the Battle at the Binary Stars. The main characters are Philippa Georgiou and Gabriel Lorca. The characters are so far removed from the Discovery time period that you sometimes forget that this is supposed to be a Discovery novel. The plot is based upon events described in the TOS episode "The Conscience of the King".“Drastic Measures” is an entertaining novel. Dayton Ward does a good job of telling this story but it does seem a bit padded. There are sections that do not advance the plot much. I do recommend it to DISCO fans. I just wish it was set in a more interesting time and had more elements from the show.

THE MAKING OF A KING
WARNING *** There are spoilers ahead for both the book itself and the original Star Trek TV Series...Maintain station keeping until ready to advance...Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Lorca had unexpectedly found a life for himself on Tarsus IV. What had started as another assignment in his move up the ladder of command in Starfleet had turned out to be one that suddenly seemed to have given him a home. Something he had never had. But then, the infection came...then the attack and murder of people under his command...and finally...the nightmare. The shrill sound of destruction in the dark tore everything he had away. Now, all he can think of is finding the one responsible and raining his own brand of vengeance down upon him.Author and Dayton Ward is no stranger to Star Trek having crafted over 35 stories in that universe. This is his first foray into the world of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and, while not set in the time line of the TV Series, he has written a brilliant work that ties in Discovery with the original series as well as so many more pieces of its history and foundation. Ward has taken one of the more dramatic episodes of the original TV series - THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING - and anchored its roots into a new story that gives us the reasons why. Here is Anton Karidian aka Adrian Kodos - The Executioner, and created a work of that delves into the minds and motivations of one of the greatest mass murders in Federation history as well as the horror of those who support him and others who lose everything because of him. Ward handles the undulating waves of emotions as the rise and fall in a world where death was coming for them all, but only some suffered its call. This story is set in 2246, 10 years before the first episode of DISCOVERY and includes younger and more naïve versions of those who populate the TV screen. Gabriel Lorca and Philippa Georgiou are here. And look for appearances from some of the key players in the future of Starfleet and the Federation as this story unwinds.

A deeper look into two of Discovery's captains.
I found Gabriel Lorca to be one of the most fascinating characters of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, and I've been hoping for more of him ever since. I've also enjoyed much of Michelle Yeoh's work and so to see her character of Philippa Georgiou be expanded upon as well, made this a compelling read. I also enjoyed the setting, the tragedy of Kodos and the colony on Tarsus IV, more than I expected. I felt for a time that this was a story that Trek had told perhaps too much already, but this book provided a fresh perspective on the entire event. I think I'll go watch the Original Series episode "Conscience of the King" again soon. Dayton Ward does a terrific job with giving the reader a look into the psyches of Lorca, Georgiou and even Kodos himself, making the latter a bit more than just a one episode antagonist, albeit an important one in Trek lore.

Can't wait to read this book!
I love the series and am excited to see a series of novels coming out about Star Trek: Discovery. I cannot review it yet as I haven't read it but I am really happy with my purchase. Looks like a great buy.

An OK Read
I am personally setting a goal to keep up with the Star Trek Discovery story lines so that is the reason I read this book or should I say finished it. Had it not been part of my goad to keep up with Star Trek Discovery literary works I probably would have stopped near the mid-way point. This was an ok read. From a story perspective, it was not bad. It had a flow. The characters were not really made to stand out and the writing style was dry and not able to keep my attention. It was by no means a bad book just what I would define as a 3 star read.
