Painted well. It is ceramic or something of that nature so make sure to be careful with it. Two years ago I bought one for my first born and one last week for my 2nd child I just had. Love them.

Cute but easily broken
It is very cute, but the screw holding the snowflake came out and would not screw back in. I'm still happy with the purchase, and was able to somewhat fix it with some superglue.
