Vast improvement.
We had the old version of this and the power cable kept breaking. This version is much more sturdy and has better connectors.

Converts modern digital optical audio output to good old analogue
Brilliant Product. My brand new Samsung Smart TV (stupidly ? irony ?) does not have either an analogue headphone jack or an analogue Audio Output. This great little box provides me with both. No set up needed just plug it in and off it goes. I can now attach any of my old speaker systems dotted round the house and listen to the TV when in the Kitchen, bathroom, office or wherever I happen to be working. Why should I go to the expense of buying wi-fi/ bluetooth or whatever speakers when I have 25 to 50 year old speaker systems which work fine.If it ain't broke don't fix it !!

Very useful if your TV doesn't have a 3.5mm audio output jack
Bought this to allow me to plug a Bose component HiFi system into a Samsung TV which surprised me by not having a 3.5mm audio output, (only digital audio) ... it's the first TV I've come across without one!This arrived next day, and plugged into the digital audio output, and a USB socket on the TV for power, and after changing the TV digital audio output type to PCM from Auto, the sound output has been working perfectly since, and is clear and free of hissing, crackling or buzzing.My only gripe is the TV remote control doesn't allow you to change the volume of the digital audio output (presumably it outputs at some fixed industry standard level), but this is an issue with the TV rather than this converter unit.

Great little device.
Bought to provide analogue output to a TV which had no audio out or headphone socket. I use TV USB to power the 5v device, the, supplied, optical cable connects to the TV and outputs via RCA phono leads to amplifier. There is also an aux output. There is no volume control built in to the device so I use the amplifier to control volume level. I have had to change sound settings on the tv to output two channel stereo rather than Dolby digital as the converter cannot deal with such. It works very well though, the audio is clear and free of interference or drop outs.
